Philosophy
The philosophy guiding this programme is to broadening and deepening the intellectual
exposure of students in core Banking and Finance courses so as to develop their capacity to
undertake in-depth Post Graduate research in any of the core areas of the discipline.
Objective of the programme
The MSc programme is designed to train and develop prospective academic researchers and
specialists in financial institutions and markets by providing thorough background in the
intellectual traditions of the discipline.
Entry Qualification
Candidate must have good Honours degree (at least second class) in Business Administration,
Banking and/or Finance from a recognized University.

Course Description
FIN 800: Research Methodology
The course is designed to train students in the skill of scientific information gathering,
analysis and interpretation in dealing with problems in Business Administration. Topics to be
covered include the following: Meaning and nature of research; comparison between research
common sense and science; Types of research; the research cycle; selecting research topics,
problem and hypotheses formulation, Research design; research instruments and Data
collection, Data Analysis and interpretation; research report, Research and the issues of
relevance; ethical issues in research.
FIN 802: Entrepreneurship Development
This course is designed to teach students how to start and invest in a new company and how
to manage an existing business. It is intended to provide exposure to new venture, to illustrate
stark realities (and rewards tools) of an entrepreneurial career and to describe and analyze
problems of businesses. Various methods of financing small and medium firms with
particular emphasis on a development of a business plan, how to raise fund, at what costs and
from whom. Problems facing a new or existing enterprise such as marketing, production,
personnel development and strategies will also be examined.
FIN 804: Computer Applications
The course aims to expose students to a relatively high knowledge regarding computer usage
and applications. Topics to be covered include introduction to basic programming, data types,
constant and variables statements assignment statements input-output statement, control
statement.
FIN 801: Economic Theory
This course distinguishes between micro-economic which is deals with individual and firms
and macro-economic which deals with aggregates within the economy. Topics to be covered
are basic economic concepts such as opportunity costs, time preferences, marginal analysis,
comparative advantage, the nature of profit in the context of any comparative market

economy. Others are national income analysis, money and inflation, international trade and
finance, government interference, and major past and present economic doctrines.
FIN 803: Quantitative Analysis
The course seeks to expose students to the use of quantitative techniques in business
management theories and practices. Some of the topics to be covered, among others, include
games theory, linear programming, network analysis, dynamic programming, decision
theories, structural equation modeling, inventory models, and queuing models, among others.
Specifically, the course has been designed to enable students study and apply quantitative
techniques in research and business decision-making situations, emphasizing multivariate
quantitative methods, optimization and stochastic techniques relevant in understanding and
solving business management problems.
FIN 805: M.Sc. Seminars in Finance
This seminar introduces students to the most recent research in the area of Finance and
Investment, examining current issues and trends. Students have an opportunity to present and
discuss their own research and actively engage in the analysis and discussion of the work of
others. Each student is expected to make at least one presentation during the course, focusing
on the formulation, design, execution and results of his/her research.
FIN 899: M.Sc. Research Seminars Candidates are hereby required to make at least two well-researched seminar presentations.
The first presentation is the thesis proposal if the approved proposal is completed. The
presentation will emphasize the actual result of the students’ research work.
FIN 810: Corporate Finance
The nature of the firm and corporate objectives, implementation of the firms’ goals for choice
among alternative investment projects (the capital budgeting problems), market evaluation of
non assets under uncertainty and implication for capital budgeting, analysis and illustration
with problems of alternative investment criteria, alternative approaches to value of the firm
and the cost of capital; discussion of corporate financial problems; e.g. leasing, mergers and
acquisitions, and issuance of new securities.
FIN 812: Regulations of Financial Institutions
An advanced treatment of fiscal and monetary policy issues in respect of economic
stabilization measures. The instruments and targets of fiscal and monetary policies and theory
impacts on macroeconomic aggregates including unemployment, income levels, inflation etc.
regulatory institutions in domestic and international economic environment such as the CBN,
NDIC/FDIC, IMF etc. as they affect national and international economic development.

FIN 814: Basic Econometrics
In this introduction to Econometrics, topics to be covered include: the study of the
specification of econometric models in economics and finance theory, stochastic
disturbances, and the link between conceptual variables and observable economic data are
combined. Other topics include: estimation of single equation linear; non-linear models by
least squares (OLS) and other methods and estimation of time-series models and
simultaneous equation models. Particular attention is given to specifications of
problems and errors, and the application of the various tools to aid analysis in finance.
FIN 811: Theory of Financial Intermediation
The course analysis financial markets conceptually and theoretically, emphasizing the role,
structure and. activities of financial intermediaries. The dynamic pattern of financial flows is
analyzed by flour of funds, ad uses/sources of funds, models of the process of financial
intermediation and the theory of the banking firm. The crucial role of interest rate and
structure of interest rates are analyzed. Also analyzed are the regulatory framework and its
impact on banking operations, market structure and performance of the financial
intermediation functions of the institutions.
International Business Finance
covers overview of the international financial system; international banking and financial
market, including the foreign exchange risks and management practices by international
businesses; Euro-banks and Euro-financing; financing methods in international trade;
international, financial management, capital budgeting, project finance, and transfer pricing
by multinational corporations, foreign direct investment, multilateral investment, guarantee
and investment codes; intentional business operations in the context of changing global
financial developments.
Derivative Securities and Markets
The rapid and extreme development in financial services industry demand that graduates in
finance be exposed to financial innovations in recent years. The course in derivatives markets
fulfils this requirement. The course introduces the students to the concepts types, operations
and regulatory framework of financial derivatives markets. It covers traded options,
futures/future contracts, forwards, swaps, derivatives exchanges and traded systems.
Investment Analyses and Portfolio Management
The study covers portfolio selection as problem of constrained utility maximization under
conditions of uncertainty; Discussion of the different markets, along empirical evidence for
validity of the theory; activities involved in making selection among alternative financial

assets from the viewpoints of individuals and institutional investors; implications of the
efficient market theory for the profitability o1altemative investment; valuation of financial
statements and analysis. The empirical evidence for various mean variance models of assets
for evaluating portfolio performances are emphasized.
Micro and Small Business Finance
The course covers the problem of provision of microcredit and the financial problems of
small business in the economy. Topics covered include: sources, acquisition and use of
capital by small businesses; financial analysis relating to income, repayment of capital and
risk management, leasing and other finance alternatives, the role of small business in the
economy, required government assistance, how microcredit can be effectively provided and
the provision of finance by credit institutions as well as the non-financial components to
make finance be productively employed.
Public Sector Financial Management
This covers the procedure for estimation and control of government expenditure and the
raising of revenue; estimation of expenditure, authorization of expenditure and accounting
processes for planning public expenditure; efficiency of government expenditure;
measurement of efficiency of government expenditure; objective functions of government
expenditure; the planning programming Budgeting system and other budgeting systems as an
approach to cost effectiveness appraisal of government expenditure. Also included are: the
multi-nature of public sector- federal state and local authorities and the financial relationship,
between government units; fiscal federalism, local government fiancé rates, borrowing,
federal/state grants, commercial activities; the systems of federal/states grants and changes
overtime; the central of local authority expenditure: current arid capital, its planning and
control; pricing and investment problems, accosting and financial control in public owned
enterprises.
International Banking and Finance
Topics covered include; overview of the global financial system, foreign exchange market,
nations! banking and financial markets, Euro-banks and euro financing, international trade
financing; international financial institutions and financial integration in ECOWAS and
Africa; problems of developing countries in the international financial system and markets;
reform of the international financial system; external borrowing, debt and debt servicing
problems; foreign aid and foreign direct investment; Nigeria and international trading,
payments and financial issues in the context of the changing global financial developments.

The course is designed to expose students to the basic principles of lending and credit
administration. It covers topics in bank credit organizations, the lending environment and
financial statements analysis. Others are sectored forms of lending such as commercial
lending, consumer lending and credit administration. The course involves course work and
case studies.
Marketing of Financial Services
The course covers the nature, characteristics and consequences of financial services, and
consequently, the need for products to be marketed in a special way. It is to enable students to
skillfully apply marketing concepts, functions, strategies and techniques, for efficient
provision of banking financial services. It also requires background knowledge of banking
theory and practice for effective application of marketing principles to enhance financial
services delivery at profit.
Financial Planning and Control
The course emphasizes basic concepts and analytical tools essential for financial decision in
understanding of the market environment in which the firm operates. Possible top
Concepts of organizational goals and the selection and preparation of information essential to
financial planning and control of firms operations such as cost estimation and analysis, cost
\volume profit analysis, budgeting and budgetary control, variance analysis and cost
allocation.
DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PhD) DEGREE PROGRAMME IN FINANCE
The programme is offered by the Department of Business Management, with the
active collaboration of the Faculty leading to PhD degree on the basis of supervised

Objectives
To develop prospective academics and researchers and financial analysis’s by broadening the
intellectual and research capabilities of the candidates.
Admission Requirements
A. The candidates seeking admission to the Ph.D degree in Finance must have a Master
of Science (M.Sc) degree in Finance, Business Administration, Management,
Banking, Marketing or Accounting with at least B average grade or CGPA of 4.0 and
above from the University of Maiduguri or any other institution recognised by the
senate of the University of Maiduguri.
B. Candidates must have Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration,
Management, Banking, Marketing or Accounting with a minimum of Second Class
(Honours) Lower Division from the University of Maiduguri or any other institution
recognised by the senate of the University of Maiduguri.
C. In addition to (a and b) above, candidate must have five (5) “O” level passes at credit
level or equivalent in relevant subjects including English Language and Mathematics.
DURATION
a. Full Time: A minimum of six (6) semesters, a maximum of ten (10) semesters.
b. Part Time: A minimum of eight (8) semesters and a maximum of sixteen (16)
semesters.
Programme Structure
The PhD programme is based taught courses and thesis. The candidate’s self prepared
thesis will be based on individual study under the supervision of a Department or Faculty
member and an external supervisor. The candidate’s researched topic is supposed to make an
original contribution to knowledge in a particular field of Finance. The programme structure
is as follows:
On successful completion and passing of all taught courses, the candidate shall be
permitted by the supervisor and the department to work on the main thesis, keeping in view,
the original contribution to knowledge by way of investigating new facts, techniques and
practices of Finance. Further, the candidate during the research period must acquire in-depth
knowledge in the area of research topic, will not only make original contribution to
knowledge in the original field but should be worthy of publication. The thesis must not have
been presented for a higher degree in any University in the country or abroad.

A candidate found deficient in any course in his transcript may be required to take and
pass the same at Masters Level with B grade within the department but will not earn any
credit.
No candidate shall proceed on thesis writing until he/she passed the prescribed course work.

The course treats at the theoretical level the conceptual foundations of funds allocation
among asset and assets classes, and analyses the effects of various corporate financial policy
decisions (e.g capital structure and dividends policies) on the value of the firm. It also
includes analysis of the effects of taxes, bankrupting cost, and agency costs on these
decisions. The analysis is conducted successively under the assumptions of perfect and
imperfect markets and certainty and uncertainty conditions. In addition it covers recent
literature with emphasis on mathematical techniques which have been used to solve problems
in portfolio theory, multi period asset pricing models and option pricing models. Financial
leverage, market efficiency and information economics, term structure models, capital market
equilibrium models, corporate fiancé issues. Reading are drawn also most exclusively from
the theoretical literature of corporate finance.

Advanced Portfolio Theory and Management
3 Units
This course provides an advanced treatment of investment portfolio theories; computer
enhanced models used to provide instruction in capital asset portfolio management and
technique. Advanced treatment of diversification theories and applications in asset selection,
analysis, and management and risk management are extensively discussed.

Advanced Theory of Financial Intermediation

This is a more advanced and theoretical treatment of selected topics covered at the masters degree
levels. Issues are dealt with in more details, bringing in relevant empirical analysis and proffering
future direction of research with seminar paper prepared and presented on specifies topics.

Advanced Quantitative Decision Techniques
3 Units
It is designed to provide students the opportunity to explore more advanced quantitative
techniques for decision-making in general and research in particular. Emphasis will be on:
quantitative methodologies in business, export, commerce and international business,
multivariate statistical methods, advance topics in optimizing techniques and stochastic
models; application of time series, inbox number, and other vital statistics to issues in
business studies.
In addition, it covers techniques of mathematical programming as applied in finance- the
development of an intuitive appreciation of the techniques as opposed to rigorous
mathematical derivation, illustration of the application in financial analysis- to be
accomplished via a computer-assessed case, analysis and / or journal articles.

The course utilizes advanced research techniques to explore problems in banking and finance.
In addition, the course teaches students the use of advanced research techniques to investigate
empirical issues in Banking and Finance. Some of the topics to be covered, among others
include advanced research designs qualitative and quantitative methods of research, advance
measurement scale, multidimensional scaling, complex sampling approaches, meta analysis,
structural equation modelling in Banking and fiancé, conjoint analysis. Specifically, the
course aims to expose students to contemporarily, but not common, research methods that are
relevant for understanding and solving general business management problems. Students are
to be exposed to scholarly works in journals and textbooks utilizing relevant advanced
research techniques.

Ph.D. Seminar in Finance I
3 Units
This seminar introduces students to the most recent research in the area of Finance and
organizational analysis, examining current issues and trends. Students have an opportunity to
present and discuss their own research an actively engage in the analysis and discussion of
the work of others. Each student is expected to make at least two presentations during the
course focusing on the formulation, design, execution, and results of his or her research. Each
student will be required to produce manuscripts in the usual journal format on the topic under
investigation. For these candidates, a sound literature review and developments of relevant
mathematical models or techniques of analysis related to the research topic will be
acceptable. Seminar will be held in the Department based on the candidate’s non-area of
specialization focus discussion geared to preparatory marketing training, dissemination of information
and development in any area of Finance subject to the approval at the departmental postgraduate
committee. Both staff and graduate students will participate in the seminar. The seminar will be
graded by panel of examiners as part of course work requirements.

This seminar introduces students to the most recent research in the area of Finance and

Fraud Investigation
3 Units
The objective of this course is to acquaint students to practical approach to fraud
investigation and examination using case studies and simulation techniques of fraud detection
including a discussion of specific procedures in forensic accounting examinations and the
reasoning behind the techniques. Coverage extends to detection, investigation, and prevention

of specific types of fraud committed against organizations and individuals. Students are
expected to submit practical research report from EFCC, ICPC and other relevant agencies as
part of course requirement.
FIN 915
ICT Management in Finance
3 Units
This course will be based on practical aspect of computer rather theoretical teaching of
computer. Each student is expected to have at least 4 hours per week of practical computer
training. Software to be trained on and put more emphasis on programming, econometrics
and modelling, SPSS and other relevant statistical packages are to be taught to aid in the
analysis of student’s research. One seminar will be presented by the doctoral students in area
of ICT relevant to his discipline.

The doctoral thesis is a research finding to be presented to the Department by the doctoral
candidate and orally to be defended before internal examiners and the external examiner as
approved by the Postgraduate Board.

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN MANAGEMENT (PDM)
Introduction
The Postgraduate Diploma in Management programme is an intensive one academic year
(part-time) programme designed to provide opportunities to those individuals:
a)
who have had no formal training in management and who wish to develop capabilities
that will enable them perform effectively in managerial positions;
b)
whose undergraduate preparation in management needs to be upgraded to enable them
to move into higher management positions or to benefit from more advanced training
in management;
c)
who followed narrow professional paths in their undergraduate training and wish to
enhance their intellectual capabilities or who chose to follow routes other than the
University to acquire qualifications that can be equated to a University degree and
who are capable of benefiting from higher management education.
PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES
The objective of the Postgraduate Diploma in Management is primarily to provide
participants with the Managerial skills necessary for appreciating the issues a ‘tasks involved
in the management of organisations and for enabling them to see how each of the major
functional areas of management relate to the total organisational context. Specifically, the
programme seeks to:
a)
introduce participants to the study of organisations and how they are managed;
b)
provide candidates with the essential statistical and quantitative took as well as
develop accounting and financial analysis skills and abilities necessary for
organisational management;
c)
provide candidates with a good knowledge base in a specialized field of management.
Admission Requirement for Postgraduate Diploma in Management (PDM) Programme.
Candidates seeking admission into the Postgraduate Diploma in Management should meet
one of the following minimum requirement.
(i)
A Second Class honours degree in any discipline other than in Accounting Business
Administration, Finance, Management, Marketing and Personnel Management from
the University of Maiduguri or any other recognized institution with at least one year
post-qualification experience;
(ii)
A Third class degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, Management,
Marketing and Personnel Management from the University of Maiduguri or any other

institution, recognized by Senate of the University of Maiduguri with at least one year
post-qualification
(iii)
A Third class degree in any field other than Accounting, Business Administration and

PDM. 600: Management Process
Analysis of current management theory and practice. Discussion of historical foundations
and investigations of various approaches to the management discipline. Primary emphasis on
administrative functions of planning, decision-making, organizing, staffing and controlling.
The informational and communication functions of management as well as the application of
the core management functions in developing countries are also discussed.

This course introduces the student to the major technical concepts of data base management
systems. Topics include: management aspects of information; hardware and software; and
design of information systems. Specific tools for the design of a management information
system such as systems flow charts and data models are discussed. Procedural flow charts
are also examined. Attention is given to the organisational and social consequences of
computerized information processing.
PDM. 602: Statistics for Management
Management statistics acquaints students with statistical techniques available to aid the
decision-maker in a corporate environment.
It develops in the student a facility for
identifying, analyzing and making concrete recommendations for solving business operating
problems through data analysis. Analytical skills are developed by solving problems which
require use of techniques such as marginal (incremental) analysis, statistical inference, time
series analysis systems approaches, and probabilistic decision-making models.
PDM. 603: Managerial Economies
The application of price theory to decision problems of the firm is treated in this course. The
basic emphasis is on how economics is used in management decision-making. Topics
include: demand analysis and forecasting, theory of cost and production, quantitative cost
analysis, price-output investment decisions. The course is designed to help students learn the
relevance of the basic economic theory in management decision-making.
PDM. 604: Production Management
Integration of management principles and concepts with emphasis on the production
functions of manufacturing, service, and governmental organisations. Production control,
quality control, materials handling, and value analysis are explored.
PDM. 605: Financial Accounting
This course is designed to introduce students to business accounting systems and to provide
instruction in accounting practice and procedures. Topics covered include fundamental
accounting concepts, double entry book-keeping procedures, and the business accounting
cycle. Through a series of practical exercises, students develop the ability to generate
financial statements from journal entry through end-of-period statements. Distinctions
between balance sheet, income statement and statement of retained earnings are clarified both

in concept and practice. Inventory accounting, depreciation procedures and fixed asset
accounting are treated as separate topics.
PDM. 606: Cost and Management Accounting
The course is devoted to managerial accounting which is the internal reporting of operating
results to managers as well as business production activities and the improvement of
corporate profitability through use of cost management. Attention is paid to the design and
use of various types of cost determination systems and the different circumstances under
which they are appropriate; cost concepts and decision-making together with a variety of
accounting controls etc. Topics covered include job order and process cost systems, standard
costs, flexible budgets, overhead application, variance analysis, budgeting and control
techniques, and cost-volume-profit decisions.
PDM. 607: Marketing Management
This course provides a broad exposure to marketing activities and elements of the marketing
mix. The course develops a planned approach to marketing. Topics covered include the
marketing concepts and the marketing management process; market segmentation methods:
models of consumer behaviour; product policy decision-making, including positioning,
branding and life cycle concepts; channels of distribution; promotion planning, evaluation
and control; sales management; pricing; and forecasting of marketing results.
PDM. 608: Research Method
Principles and techniques of research methodology, including identification of problems, are
primary considerations. Standard statistical designs are reviewed. Organisation and
presentation of research data and the evaluation and application of research are emphasized.
PDM. 609: Mathematics for Management
Stresses development of analytical concepts of mathematics needed for management
applications. The course is designed to prepare candidates to handle the tools of quantitative
analysis and includes introduction to the use of differentials and integrals for management
science applications, matrices, determinants and linear equations etc.
PDM. 610: Economic Theory
This course distinguishes between micro-economics which deals with individuals and firms,
and macro economics which deals with aggregates within the economy. Topics covered in the
micro-economics section include basic economic concepts such as opportunity costs, time
preference, marginal analysis, comparative advantage, the nature of profit, in the context of

any comparative market economy. In Macro-economics, five main areas are discussed:
national income analysis, money and inflation, international trade and finance, government
interference, and major past and present economic doctrines.
PDM. 611: Financial Management
Financial decision of a firm are examined and policies arc developed for managing current
assets, selecting sources of funds, and investing those funds. Topics for discussion include the
interdependency of sources and costs of fund and security analysis, as well as the common
factors faced by corporations and investors in combining assets to create efficient portfolios.
PDM – Banking and Finance
PDM. 620 Practice of Banking
Provides a basic knowledge of the monetary and financial system; the place of banks in the
national economy; the framework within which banks operate and the range of services
provided by banks. The course then stretches to consider the management of commercial
banks and the Interaction of participants in the Nigerian money and capital markets.
Management of lending, the function of investment banking firms are also examined indepth.
PDM. 621: Law Relating to Financial Institutions
Covers those wide-ranging aspects of law most relevant to everyday banking, investment and
insurance practice including basic features of mercantile law, the types of securities most
commonly taken by banks and negotiable instruments. Statutes and regulations governing
the establishment of banks, agency, partnership, company law, bankrupcy including the failed
banks decree, NDIC, property and guarantees are discussed.
PDM. 622: Corporate Financial Management
Attention is given to the analytical methods that can be used to accomplish financial
objectives. Topics include sources of funds, capital budgeting, cost of capital, capital)
structure, leasing, dividend policy; maturity structure of debt, share valuation and alternative
financing instruments and strategies.
PDM. 623: Investment Management
Deals primarily with questions of resource allocation in the organisation. Topic coverage
includes capital budgeting techniques as related to risk and uncertainty; corporate
profitability and divisional portfolio management concepts; and acquisition analysis, strategy
and tactics.

An examination of public expenditure decisions, budgetary processes and the concept of
accountability in the public sector-problems are addressed in the financial management of
state-owned enterprises, including Investment criteria, social cost of capital, performance

PDM. 631: Public Sector Accounting
Operation of government entities and educational, medical, social and other such
organizations. The course concentrates on application of the fund theory of accounting and
budgeting process, achieving objectives through financial planning and control.
PDM. 632: Procurement Management
Examines the processes of sourcing and procurement of supplies in organisations. The office
of the Purchasing executive and the tenders committee/board system are the major focus of
this course.
PDM. 633: Stores and Supplies Management
Considers the management of the store including store organization, documentation,
inventory management, coding, stock verification and stock-taking, receiving and issuing of
stock, security of stock etc. The relationship between the store and user departments as well
as the procurement functions are treated as separate topics.

PDM. 640: Personnel Administration
A review of the major areas of personnel problems; selection, placement and replacement,
compensation, training and development, labour relations and employee services. These
activities are viewed from the position of the small and large firms.
PDM. 641: Industrial and Labour Relations
The functioning of collective bargaining relationship. Survey of laws affecting the conduct of
parties in a bargaining relationship. Factors in negotiations and the bargaining process,
strategy and tactics; principles and specifics of contract clauses. administration and
enforcement of the collective bargaining agreement.

An analysis of the problems of the occupational environment in small and large
organisations. This will emphasize practical applications that are of immediate concern to
participants but will also include study of new approaches to employment, unemployment,
productivity, motivation, attitudes, job satisfaction, job enlargement, fatigue, monotony,
working conditions and conflict resolution.
PDM - General Management
PDM. 650: Decision Making In Organisations
Theories of human problem-solving and their application to organizational decisions at
strategic level behavioural effects of computers, models and information system on decisionmaking are explored. Programmed, unprogrammed and crisis decision types are also
examined in detail.
PDM. 651: Business Strategy and Planning
Focuses primarily on concepts of corporate strategy formulation and implementation by
exploring those unique functions and responsibilities of senior management revolving around
the choice of corporate goals; the scanning and assessment of environmental trends and
opportunities, and the evaluation of corporate strengths and weaknesses.
PDM. 652: Entrepreneurship and the Management of the Small Enterprise
Designed to teach students how to start or invest in a new company and how to manage an
existing small business. It is intended to provide exposure to new ventures, to illustrate the
stark realities (and rewards too) of an entrepreneurial career and to describe and analyse the
problems of small business. Various methods of financing small firms with particular
emphasis on the development of a business plan, how to raise money, at what cost and from
whom. Problems facing a new or existing small enterprise such as marketing, production,
personnel, development of strategies will also be examined.

The objectives of this course are: (1) to acquire a knowledge of the major consumer

PDM. 661: Marketing Research
Examination of information requirements for marketing decisions. Particular emphasis is
placed on development of cost and benefit analytical tools for evaluating various marketing
information systems designs. Other topics include the design of surveys and experiments,
design models, and performance criteria.
PDM. 662: Sales and Distribution Management
Focuses on the management of the field sales force and distribution of products and services.
Wilt is of distributing products and services are surveyed. The selling process, establishing
sales policy and organizing for sales; recruitment, training, motivation. compensation and
control of the sales-force are examined in detail.
PDM. 663: Advertising and Sales Promotion
Focuses on planning, implementing, and controlling advertising and sales promotion
programmes from the point of view of the advertising manager. Topic coverage include the
relationship of advertising to the other functions of marketing, how to approach the planning
process, relationship of advertising to consumer decision process, organization of the
advertising department, programmes for reaching advertising objectives, the sales promotion
plan, and control and evaluation of advertising and sales promotion programmes.
MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (MBA)
Introduction
Earning the MBA is recognized world-wide as a mark of quality and excellence in the career
development of a manager. The Master of Business Administration offered a minimum of
twenty four months (24) for MBA full – time and thirty six months for MBA (Part-Time)
intensive professional degree programme designed to provide participants with the skills,
knowledge, and attitudes which will prepare them for decision making responsibilities and
leadership roles in industry, commerce, consultancy, and all levels of governmental

Management from the University of Maiduguri or any other institution recognized by
the Senate of the University of Maiduguri of Maiduguri Plus at least one year

Diploma in Management (PGDM) passed at a Credit (B i.e CGPA of 4.00) level with
a minimum of credit classification from the University of Maiduguri or any other

MGT 800: Corporate Finance
Provides an overview of corporate financial structure and acquaints students its various
means of providing funds to a business. Topics covered include: Investment Banking
practices; common stock, long term debt and preferred stock considerations, Warrants and
convertible securities are discussed in the context of providing flexibility in financial
decisions. Consideration of other sources of funds, including term loans, lease arrangements,
dividend policy and working capital management is also stressed. The advantages,
disadvantages, and costs of each financial source are put in an analytical framework. Money
and capital markets are described and related to corporate fund raising and investments.
Financially, discriminate analysis, corporate bankruptcy and advanced capital budgeting are
examined. The focus of the course is on providing analytical means to evaluate corporate
financial alternatives.
MGT 801: Marketing Management
Provides a broad exposure to marketing activities and elements of the marketing mix. The
course develops a planned approach to marketing. Topics covered include marketing concept
and the marketing management process; market analysis and market segmentation method of
consumer behaviour; product policy decision-making, including positioning, branding and
life cycle concepts; channels of distribution; promotion planning, evaluation and control;
sales management; pricing; and forecasting of marketing results.

MGT 803: Introduction to Financial and cost Accounting
Deals with business accounting systems and provides instruction in accounting practice and
procedures. Topics covered include fundamental accounting concepts, double entry bookkeeping procedures and the business accounting cycle. Through a series of practical
exercises, students develop the ability to generate financial statements from journal entry
through to final accounts. Distinctions between balance sheet, income statement, and
statement of retained earnings are clarified both in concept and practice. Inventory
accounting, depreciation procedures and fixed asset accounting are treated. Deals with
control of business production activities and the improvement of corporate profitability
through use of cost management. Attention is paid to the design and use of various types of
cost determination systems, and the different circumstances under which they appropriate.
Topics covered include job order and process cost systems, standard costs, flexible budgets,
overhead application, variance analysis, budgeting and control techniques, and cost-volumeprofit decisions

MGT 804: Computer Appreciation
Brief history of computers; computer system and devices, flow-charting techniques;
fundamentals of computer programming; overview of systems and design are considered.
Issues and problems associated with the creation of business computer system etc.
MGT 805: Business and Company Law
Familiarises candidates with the legal aspects of business. Law of contract, Agency, hire
purchase, carriage of goods, and related laws are examined. The company Act and company
and miscellaneous matters decree are examined in depth.
MGT 806: Organizational Behaviour
Traditional and modern theories of organization, the behavioural consequences of alternative
organization designs, and internal organization system, problems involved in goals,
structures, roles, power, authority, communications, and control are examined. Problems of

implementing change, roles of external and internal consultants, determining needs and
measuring relevant variables are also discussed.
MGT 807: Management Research Methods
Examines the issues and techniques involved in designing and conducting research. The need
for the uses of management research; philosophical and conceptual bases of scientific
research, problem identification and formulation and research design are discussed.
Distinctions are also made between quantitative and qualitative research; between academic
and business research and their methods. The application and uses of multi-variant techniques
are discussed in details. Multiple regressions, discriminate analysis are studied in addition to
factor analysis, cluster analysis and multi-dimensional scaling.
MGT 808: Quantitative Methods for Management
The advanced concepts and techniques of quantitative management analysis, model
building/mathematical modeling and management science are taught. Other arescovered are
Decision Making Analysis, PERT/CPM, Queuing Analysis, financial Modeling, Risk
analysis and aversion, Inventory models, Markov process, and Sensitivity Analysis and
Duality.
MGT 809: Advanced Operations Management
Considers the role of the manufacturing function in relation to the company as a whole and to
the industry in which the company operates. The course therefore explores how a concern for
corporate policy can be combined with developing tactical means of achieving corporate
objectives through physical operations. Coverage includes evaluation of the important criteria
for successful manufacturing operations in an industrial sector; assessment of the company’s
strengths and weaknesses in terms of its manufacturing structures vis-à-vis, the industry as a
whole; setting manufacturing policy objectives which are compatible with the corporate
objectives, investment in organization, production planning, liability and maintenance.
MGT 810: Business Environment
Analyses the economic, social, behavioural, political and technological environment of the
management of business enterprise, Emphasis is placed on changes and the individual and
interactive impacts of such changes in business.
MGT 811: Corporate Strategy
Explores the approaches to strategy and policy formulation and implementation. It examines
the key problems which affect the character and success of the total enterprise. The lectures,
cases and readings draw attention to the appropriate techniques for analysis and methods of
implementing change in the complex situations which typically confront the Chief Executive.

Topics covered include: Evaluation of strategic thinking, strategic planning tools and
concepts including measures to assess the economic contributions of strategy; developing a

MGT 812: Managerial Economics
Examines the application of price theory to decision problems in the firm. Demand analysis
and forecasting, theory of cost and production, quantitative cost analysis, price-outputinvestment decisions are discussed. The course explores the relevance of economic theory in
management decision-making.
MGT 813: Industrial and Public Policy
Familiarizes participants with the reasoning behind industrial development policies so as to
correctly identify the position of commercial and industrial organizations in the overall policy
framework of the nation. Coverage includes the concept and elements of industrialisation
policies, implications of policies on the development and management of industrial and
commercial enterprises, the international environment, the flow of capital and technology, the
role of regional integration in industrialisation and techniques of assessing projects in
financial and national economic terms. Effects of policy instability on industry and commerce
as well as implications of national visioning for industrial management are considered
separately. Case studies of successful industry and government cooperations in Japan and
Asian countries arc used to complement lectures.
MGT 814: MBA Language programme.
Students will be exposed to language other than English that is used as a means of
communication to do business that is common particularly in Africa and the world over such
as: French, Arabic, Chinese where possible etc.
MGT 820: Advanced Accounting Theory

MGT 824: Public Sector Accounting.
This is directed towards the provision of relevant accounting data to decision makers.
Coverage includes accounting information and decision models, budgeting, cost estimation
and control, and the use of mathematical model techniques. The approach taken is a talent of
the conceptual and applied nature of the discipline.
MGT 825: International Accounting.
International dimensions of accounting and control, international business and multinational
strategy, international patterns of accounting development, comparative international
accounting system and practices, pressures for international accounting harmonization and
disclosure, international standard and organizations, Multinational management perspective
on information disclosure and regulation: Accounting for multinational organizations,
international segmental reporting, comparison and full discussion of selected Generally
Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAPs) of United Kingdom, United States of America,
international Accounting Standards and Nigerian Statements of Accounting Standards in
prepation and interpretation of financial statements. Inflation accounting application to
multinational organization financial statements. Accounting for foreign exchange derivative.
Translation of foreign currency of financial statements. International disclosure trends and
financial analysis, product costing and transfer pricing, international taxation, external
auditing of foreign operations, global accounting issues into the 21st cectury.

MGT 830: Security Analysis and Portfolio Management.
Reviews recent theoretical and empirical advances in portfolio management and their
implications for the practice of investment. Focus is on techniques and approaches for
analyzing the different types of market securities and methods of evaluating investment
opportunities and portfolios. Topics covered include: The institutional aspects of capital
markets together with the analytical techniques that apply to security analysis; behavior of
security prices, investors risk, and security evaluation and inflation; evaluation of portfolio
theory and practices, Markowitzian mean-variance approach to portfolio management;
efficient market hypothesis and capital asset pricing model, risk measurement services; and
international portfolio management. Portfolio management in selected business including
financial institutions are also discussed.
MGT 831: Marketing of Financial Services
Considers services marketing with particular reference to banking, the marketing function
within the financial institutions, wholesale and retail market development, marketing
strategy, technology in product development. Topics covered include; Nature of services,
managing strategy and the marketing mix; market analysis and market research, product
planning and management; pricing, promotion, place, people, physical evidence and process.

MGT 832: Risk and Insurance Management
This course considers how insurance is used to compensate risk. It discusses the specific uses
of insurance with respect to personal and business risks that arise from life, health, property
and liability contingencies. Theory, institutional relationship and legal factors are stressed.
MGT 833: Public Finance and Fiscal Policy
A study of the impact of government fiscal operations on resource allocation and income
distribution. Special attention is given to the relationship of government expenditure and
taxation to employment and price levels, the alternative choices available to influence the rate
of economic activity etc. Special attention is given to such elements as the impact of
government policies on the tax and fiscal relations among federal, state and local
governments; the consideration of public budgetary policy; implication of budgetary policy
for the private business sector.

as allocators of funds and distributors of risk are studied. Particular attention is given to the
role and functions of financial intermediaries, the management process in financial

MGT 835: Bank Management
Focuses on the management of commercial banks and the interaction of participants in the
Nigerian money and capital markets. Management of lending is a major topic and includes
credit analysis and the structuring of workable and profitable loan agreements with the
immediate and longer term needs of both the borrower and the lending institution. Through
the use of cases, the course details the use of financial statement information and credit
principles as they relate to credit granting decisions.
MGT 840: Personnel Management
Covers manpower planning; recruitment, selection and development; separation/early
retirement/redundancy, reward; personnel systems; the management of the personnel
department; the contribution of the personnel manager to the management of the
organisation. Relationship to line colleagues and particularly to the chief executive, and the
challenge of the personnel function. Manpower audit and salary administration are major
topics.
MGT 841: Organizational Design and Theory
This course gives participants an overview of major issues confronting managers in
structuring their organizations and managing organizational behavior. Traditional and modern
theories of organization; the behavioural consequences of alternative organization design, and
internal organization systems, problems involved in goals, structures, roles; power, authority,
communications and control are discussed. The relationship of authority, responsibility, and
its delegation arte also considered. Participants are called upon to diagnose organizational
functions, analyze deficiencies, and determine ways of changing organizational structures to
realize goals.
MGT 842: Entrepreneurship Design

Designed to stimulate a creative approach to the problems of the small firm by entrepreneurs,
the course examines the role of small business in a dynamic economy. Attention is given to
such issues as establishment of new enterprises, financing, organization, planning, operation,
marketing, growth and acquisitions. Other issues include growth models, diversification,
technology, licensing, patent and inventions.
MGT 844: International Management
Explores the dimensions of international business activity, types of international business,
operations; organisation of multinational firm; policy formulation, personnel section and
control methods in overseas subsidiaries. The impact of the domestic and foreign investment
climates on decision-making in multinational firms, and the impact of foreign operations on
domestic investment and employment.
MGT 845: Industrial Relations
Focus upon the interaction of management and labour in the organization. Following an
excursion into the structure, scope and history of the Nigerian labour movement the course
stretches to examine labour laws, collective bargaining, mediation and work stoppage.
Contract administration and interpretation are considered in detail, and the relationship
between management rights and employee discipline is developed. Cases and case lets on
collective bargaining and arbitration are extensively used to supplement lectures.
MGT 850: Marketing Research
Familiarizes the student with a number of experimental and survey techniques being used in
market and marketing research. In the light of sound methodology and technique, current
literature in the area will be discussed. The role of research in marketing management
decision process; the development and applications of motivation research techniques and
marketing experimentation are considered in details. Problems and prospects of market
research in developing countries as well as current developments in the field are also
examined. Assessment is by presentation of a practical project.
MGT 851: Consumer Behaviour
Explores the dynamics of consumer behavior from a multidisciplinary perspective. Emphasis
is on consumer decision making processes e.g.: product choice, brand loyalty and switching,
store loyalty etc. Students are exposed to the theoretical and research sources contributing to

the understanding of such variables as reference group, learning, motivation, attitude
formation and change etc. Managerial implications will be examined by means of case
studies. The second part of the course examines the organizational buyer behavior theories
and models. The buying decision making process; factors influencing buying decision; and
the theory of the buying centre are examined,. A survey of the comprehensive models of
organizational buying behavior including those of the public sector is also undertaken.
MGT 852: Marketing Thought
This course interfaces classic marketing literature with contemporary marketing issues and
thought as expressed by economists, marketers, educators, consumers and consumer
advocates. The course examines and evaluates the historical views of marketing, its domain
and roles in the development process against contemporary views as well as practical
marketing problems of developing countries. Factors militating against the development of
efficient and effective marketing systems in developing countries and possible solutions,
comparative marketing; and consumerism are examined as separate topics.
MGT 853: International Marketing
This course is about international marketing, and covers the opportunities and constraints that
confront a marketing manager of a firm expanding abroad. Considered in turn are the market
selection decisions, the various market entry alternatives such as exports, licensing and the
components of the marketing mix viewed from an international perspective. Prospects of the
south-south trading ad vocation; regional integration with particular focus on ECOWAS:
trade in services in the context of the WTO; as well as Nigerian Export promotion council are
critically examined as separate topics. Assessment and examination on this course is by
submission of a project report of not less than 4,000 words.
MGT 854: Industrial Marketing
Explores the theoretical and practical aspects of marketing of industrial goods and services to
business, government and other professional buyers. The problems of negotiating and bidding
for long term contracts and maintaining customer-supplier relationships under changing
business and economic conditions are stressed. Areas such as the role of reciprocity as a
marketing tool, the problems of segmenting industrial markets, technology acquisition, raw
materials development, cooperation in Research and Development are Central topics.
MGT 855: Product Planning & Management
Focuses on the management of product and products lines from conception to deletion. The
case study method will be used to develop skills of analysis and decision-making as they

advertising, research, distribution channels, sales effort and legislation will be examined in an

MGT 890: Graduate Seminar
Discuss contemporary and emerging issues in finance, marketing, management and
investment. Models and techniques available for financial evaluation and corporate resource
management with special focus on the formulation of investment policies and financial
strategy decisions as well as financial theories of the firm are examined. The student will
present a seminar paper to the class and will be rated by examiners.
MGT 891: Internship
The candidate will be placed in to a work situation where the candidate will observe what
managers do (i.e their roles and functions). The candidate will be rated at the end of the
period by supervisor against a checklist.
MGT 899A: Research Project
This course offers participants the opportunity to systematically explore a carefully selected
problem in the candidate’s area of specialization. The research project is done on an
individual basis and should preferably be based on a problem of practical importance to the
discipline. The course is therefore designed to give participants the chance to assess and
present their own ideas and research experiences. The research project is preceded by a

Research Methodology
The course is designed to train students in the skill of scientific information gathering,
analysis and interpretation in dealing with problems in business administration. Topics to be
covered include the following: Meaning and nature of research; comparison between research
common sense and science; Types of research; the research cycle; selecting research topics,
problem and hypotheses formulation, Research design; research instruments and Data
collection, Data Analysis and interpretation; research report, Research and the issues of
relevance; ethical issues in research.
Entrepreneurship Development
This course is designed to teach students how to start and invest in a new company and how
to manage an existing business. It is intended to provide exposure to new venture, to illustrate
stark realities (and rewards tools) of an entrepreneurial career and to describe and analyze

problems of businesses. Various methods of financing small and medium firms with
particular emphasis on a development of a business plan, how to raise fund, at what costs and

Computer Applications
The course aims to expose students to a relatively high knowledge regarding computer usage
and applications. Topics to be covered include introduction to basic programming, data types,
constant and variables statements assignment statements input-output statement, control
statement.
Economic Theory
This course distinguishes between micro-economic which is deals with individual and firms
and macro-economic which deals with aggregates within the economy. Topics to be covered
are basic economic concepts such as opportunity costs, time preferences, marginal analysis,
comparative advantage, the nature of profit in the context of any comparative market
economy. Others are national income analysis, money and inflation, international trade and
finance, government interference, and major past and present economic doctrines.
Quantitative Analysis
The course seeks to expose students to the use of quantitative techniques in business
management theories and practices. Some of the topics to be covered, among others, include
games theory, linear programming, network analysis, dynamic programming, decision
theories, structural equation modeling, inventory models, and queuing models, among others.
Specifically, the course has been designed to enable students study and apply quantitative
techniques in research and business decision-making situations, emphasizing multivariate
quantitative methods, optimization and stochastic techniques relevant in understanding and
solving business management problems.
M.Sc. Seminars in Management
This seminar introduces students to, the most recent research in the area of Management,
examining current issues and trends. Students have an opportunity to present and discuss their
own research and actively engage in the analysis and discussion of the work of others. Each
student is expected to make at least one presentation during the course, focusing on the

Organizational Behaviour
This course is designed to aid students in understanding organizations both at the Micro a
Macro levels. Specifically, this course examines rigorously, the structure, function, and
people in organizations and society. Topics include organizational dynamics micro and macro
perspectives; organizations and the systems concept; organizational entry, motivation and job
satisfaction, bases of individual attitudes and behaviours in organizational settings, individual
and their relationships in organizations; and group and inter group behaviours.; organization
structures; Typology/Taxonomy of organizations; organizational efficiency and effectiveness
of organizational politics; organizational change and development; technology and
organizational structure; organizations and environment; organizational design.
Comparative Management
This course deals with theoretical and practical aspects of comparative approach and
elements to management and administration, the skills of management in private and public
sector, the military administration, the civil servants, the managers as interchangeable
experts; constraints of organizational setting on the management of group activities, profile of
Nigerian executives that have moved from public to private sectors and vice-versa. Others are
the use of management consultants and management contracts in streamlining operations,
theories of comparative management and administration, a human resource model that meets
the needs of private and public sector, selected problems in comparative management and

Strategic Management
This course deals with theoretical and practical aspects of strategy formulation and
implementation. Attention is placed on the art of strategic thinking leading to creativity and
innovation as well as the rational strategic planning process. Among the topics covered are
the following: Analyzing industry structures and dynamics; assessing positions, actions and
reactions of competitors; processes of strategic planning, technology strategy and e-business
process re-engineering and corporate turnaround. Case writing and analysis are fundamental
in this course.
Management information System (MIS)
This course is designed to expose students to the practical application of computers and
management information processing. The course provides the steps followed in the utilization
of electronic data processing (EDP) system in producing financial and management
information, in feasibility studies, system analysis, system design and system implementation
for computerized accounting system. Among other things, the course will examine the
following issues: Elements of computing mechanical and electronic, types of computers at
their applications, computer programming using either COBOL or FORTRAN, It H
processing manual and mechanized systems, system analysis and design, evaluation and
administration of MIS with emphases on computer based systems, meaning of information
technology and its application in business finance and management.
Environment and Industrial Analysis
The basis of formulating strategy is the assessment of the environment in all it dimensions.
the course will focus on the study use of concepts and techniques used in environmental and
industry analysis and in identifying trends and changes in the environment. These will
include economic, social and technological forecasting, Delphi methods, Scenario.
International Business Management
1he course focuses on the international dimension of business, including trade, financial and

This situates Nigerian Economy within the broader global economy. It examines the
implementation of the movement towards free market economy on stakeholders including
business, government, consumers, labour and public. The course takes a multidisciplinary
approach drawing from international politics, economy, finance, cross-cultural and business
management. Topics to be covered include Strategic aspects of international trade,
globalization / international institutions, industrialization strategies, determinants of
economic growth and poverty reduction in Africa; global power and wealth distribution;
lessons from Asian and Mexican financial crises; multilateral negotiations, global culture and
information technology, exchange rates / inflation/interests rates.
Industrial Relations and Conflict Management
This course traces the evolution of theory and research on industrial relations and gives an
advanced study and analysis of topics such as the ideological problems in industrial relations
literature and research, the theoretical approaches to the study of management and trade
unions, theories of strikes, wages determination, research on union decline or ascendancy and
the impact of new technology on industrial relations. This course deals with managing and
resolving workplace conflicts and examines dispute resolution and conflict management in
both various and non-various settings. The course covers two related topics: (1) third-party
dispute resolution, including alternative dispute resolution (ADR). It focuses primarily on the
use of mediation and arbitration but also deal with other dispute resolution techniques, such
as fact finding, facilitation, mini-trials, each neutral evaluation peer review, and the ombuds
function; (2) conflict management organizations, including the recent development of conflict
management systems. The course reviews the factors that have caused the growth reviews the

Corporate Finance
This course is designed to introduce students to an advanced treatment of theories and its

and capital budgeting and dividend policies) on the values of the firm. Issues to be thus
examined include:- Financial structure, capital structure, market valuation of risky assets

level or equivalent in relevant subjects including English Language and Mathematics.
DURATION
c. Full Time: A minimum of six (6) semesters, a maximum of ten (10) semesters.

Programme Structure
The PhD programme is based taught courses and thesis. The candidate’s self prepared
thesis will be based on individual study under the supervision of a Department or Faculty
member and an external supervisor. The candidate’s researched topic is supposed to make an
original contribution to knowledge in a particular field of Management. The programme
structure is as follows:
On successful completion and passing of all taught courses, the candidate shall be
permitted by the supervisor and the department to work on the main thesis, keeping in view,
the original contribution to knowledge by way of investigating new facts, techniques and
practices of Management. Further, the candidate during the research period must acquire indepth knowledge in the area of research topic, will not only make original contribution to
knowledge in the original field but should be worthy of publication. The thesis must not have
been presented for a higher degree in any University in the country or abroad.
A candidate found deficient in any course in his transcript may be required to take and
pass the same at Masters Level with B grade within the department but will not earn any
credit.
No candidate shall proceed on thesis writing until he/she passed the prescribed course work.

The Objectives of this course is to deepen the understanding of the students, of the traditional
scientific research methods. Topics to be discussed include Research in Social, Physical and
natural sciences; problems of research in developing countries; errors in research; types of
research; and research in practice: selecting a topic, problem and hypotheses formulations,
research design, instruments and data collection data analysis and interpretation, research
report, etc. The objective is for students to gain confidence in the applicability and relevance
of non-quantitative methods in our research environment, where the tradition of believing in
“objective measurement” is strong. Qualitative research methods open up for use a class of
research questions that is not accessible within the “normal” scientific method. That is, as
researchers, we can ask new questions if we have a richer repertorire of tools, both the
qualitative and the quantitative from which to choose. Topics to be discussed include the
basics of qualitative research methods and research approaches. Some qualitative research
approaches, such as phenomenography, activity theory and ethnography, data collection
methods such as interviews, fields studies and rapid rural appraisal, and observations and
evaluating collected data.

Multinational Enterprises

This course covers World Trade Organization (WTO) and multilateral trade agreements. The
course will present an overview of the WHO and then focus on multilateral trade
negotiations. Multilateral trade agreements shall be studied in four parts: trade in goods, trade
in services, trade-related aspects of intellectual property rights and institutional issues.
Agreements on trade in goods are further divided in to three subcategories: market access,
customs-relation issues and trade rules. Lastly, this course will look at the future challenges
facing the current multilateral trading system. Although this course deals with trade
agreements, it will put more emphases on economic interpretation rather than the legal
aspects. For this course, outside scholars and experts from policy, academic, and private
sectors may be invited as special quest lecturers.

This course is designed to provide an understanding of intercultural management useful for
international management and trade negotiations. Participants are expected to study the
different way various cultures think, communicate and behave, particularly within business
contexts, in order to develop a necessary level of cross-cultural competency. Today’s global
business implies co-operating, coordinating, negotiating and supervising, using management
processes appropriate to the cultural context. The student will explore cultural implications in
those management processes, as well as its impact on team-building, ethics, conflict
resolution and creative problem-solving. Solving. Students will also study their own cultural–
based perceptions, patterns of thinking and behaviour, communication styles, values and how
they can be adapted to an intercultural context. Although the course will primarily deal with
cultural differences in national culture context, it will also address cultural differences in

Entrepreneurship Development
This course is designed to teach students how to start and invest in a new company and how
to manage an existing business. It is intended to provide exposure to new venture, to illustrate
stark realities (and rewards tools) of an entrepreneurial career and to describe and analyze
problems of businesses. Various methods of financing small and medium firms with
particular emphasis on a development of a business plan, how to raise fund, at what costs and
from whom. Problems facing a new or existing enterprise such as marketing, production,
personnel development and strategies will also be examined.
Computer Applications
The course aims to expose students to a relatively high knowledge regarding computer usage
and applications. Topics to be covered include introduction to basic programming, data types,
constant and variables statements assignment statements input-output statement, control

Economic Theory
This course distinguishes between micro-economic which is deals with individual and firms
and macro-economic which deals with aggregates within the economy. Topics to be covered
are basic economic concepts such as opportunity costs, time preferences, marginal analysis,
comparative advantage, the nature of profit in the context of any comparative market
economy. Others are national income analysis, money and inflation, international trade and
finance, government interference, and major past and present economic doctrines.
Quantitative Analysis
The course seeks to expose students to the use of quantitative techniques in business
management theories and practices. Some of the topics to be covered, among others, include
games theory, linear programming, network analysis, dynamic programming, decision
theories, structural equation modeling, inventory models, and queuing models, among others.
Specifically, the course has been designed to enable students study and apply quantitative
techniques in research and business decision-making situations, emphasizing multivariate
quantitative methods, optimization and stochastic techniques relevant in understanding and

Strategic Marketing
The course aims to expose students to a relatively high knowledge regarding foundations of
strategic marketing, strategic marketing management process, opportunity analysis and
market targeting, and environment for strategic marketing management decisions, among
others. The use of relevant case studies should be emphasized.
Buyer Behaviour
The course exposes students at a relatively advanced level to the approaches to both
consumer and organizational buying behavior and marketing strategy. Area of coverage
include role of buyers in marketing, the myriad of factors that influence the buying process,
determinants of buyer behaviour, culture and buyer behaviour, comprehensive models of both
consumer and organizational buyers and buyer behaviour research among others. Others are
major classifications of buyer behaviour, buying centre, concept in the stages of the buying
decision making process, perceived risk in organizational buyer behavior.

Corporate Finance
This course is designed to introduce students to an advanced treatment of theories and its
three decision areas of financing, investment and dividend. The course therefore examines the
effects of various corporate financial policy decisions (e.g. capital structure, working capital,
and capital budgeting and dividend policies) on the values of the firm. Issues to be thus
examined include:- Financial structure, capital structure, market valuation of risky assets
under uncertainty, risk and uncertainty management strategies, capital budgeting, operation
of capital market and money market, analysis for investment in securities, portfolio theories
and the concept of diversification, efficient market theory, cost of capital, dividend policy,
corporate financial problems e.g. leasing, mergers, and of new securities, the institution of

Organizational Behaviour
This course is designed to aid students in understanding organizations both at the Micro a
Macro levels. Specifically, this course examines rigorously, the structure, function, and
people in organizations and society. Topics include organizational dynamics micro and macro
perspectives; organizations and the systems concept; organizational entry, motivation and job
satisfaction, bases of individual attitudes and behaviours in organizational settings, individual

Marketing Models
This course describes theoretical and empirical models used to analyze marketing
management issues in the area of product introduction and positioning, pricing, advertising

Sales and Distribution Management
The course introduces the students to the principles of selling and sales management,
evolution of sales management, determining the sales policy and strategy. This focuses on the
management of the field sales force and distribution of products and services. Ways of
distributing the products and services are surveyed. The selling process, establishing sales
policy and organizing the sales force; recruitment, training, motivation are some of the topics
to be treated. Compensation and control of the sales forces are also to be examined.

The course aims to expose students to relevant international marketing management issues

Admission Requirements
G. The candidates seeking admission to the Ph.D degree in marketing must have a
Master of Science (M.Sc) degree in Marketing, Business Administration,
Management, Banking and Finance with at least B average grade or CGPA of 4.0 and
above from the University of Maiduguri or any other institution recognised by the
senate of the University of Maiduguri.
H. Candidates must have Bachelor’s degree in Marketing. Business Administration,
Management, Banking and Finance, with a minimum of Second Class (Honours)
Lower Division from the University of Maiduguri or any other institution recognised
by the senate of the University of Maiduguri.
I. In addition to (a and b) above, candidate must have five (5) “O” level passes at credit
level or equivalent in relevant subjects including English Language and Mathematics.
DURATION
e. Full Time: A minimum of six (6) semesters, a maximum of ten (10) semesters.
f. Part Time: A minimum of eight (8) semesters and a maximum of sixteen (16)
semesters.

The PhD programme is based taught courses and thesis. The candidate’s self prepared
thesis will be based on individual study under the supervision of a Department or Faculty

Multinational Enterprises
3 Units
This course covers World Trade Organization (WTO) and multilateral trade agreements. The
course will present an overview of the WHO and then focus on multilateral trade
negotiations. Multilateral trade agreements shall be studied in four parts: trade in goods, trade
in services, trade-related aspects of intellectual property rights and institutional issues.
Agreements on trade in goods are further divided in to three subcategories: market access,
customs-relation issues and trade rules. Lastly, this course will look at the future challenges
facing the current multilateral trading system. Although this course deals with trade
agreements, it will put more emphases on economic interpretation rather than the legal
aspects. For this course, outside scholars and experts from policy, academic, and private
sectors may be invited as special quest lecturers.
MGT 913
Advanced Conflict Management
3 Units
This course is designed to provide an understanding of intercultural management useful for
international management and trade negotiations. Participants are expected to study the
different way various cultures think, communicate and behave, particularly within business
contexts, in order to develop a necessary level of cross-cultural competency. Today’s global
business implies co-operating, coordinating, negotiating and supervising, using management
processes appropriate to the cultural context. The student will explore cultural implications in
those management processes, as well as its impact on team-building, ethics, conflict
resolution and creative problem-solving. Solving. Students will also study their own cultural–
based perceptions, patterns of thinking and behaviour, communication styles, values and how
they can be adapted to an intercultural context. Although the course will primarily deal with
cultural differences in national culture context, it will also address cultural differences in
gender and in organizational levels as longs as they affect the global business environment.
Foundations and theories of Conflict: Theories of Conflict Resolution- An
interdisciplinary approach to examination of conflict and conflict resolution theory;
Responses to Conflict- An examination of the different approaches to conflict resolution
represented by two party negotiation facilitative processes such as mediation, the various
evaluative processes, adjudicative processes such as litigation and binding arbitration, and the
various hybrid processes; Negotiation; Mediation skills clinic- A basic introduction t o
mediation skills, theory, and ethics; Interpersonal and intergroup Conflict–An in depth study

Computer Appreciation in Marketing

This course will be based on practical aspect of computer rather theoretical teaching of
computer. Each student is expected to have at least 4 hours per week of practical computer
training. Software to be trained on and put more emphasis on programming, econometrics
and modelling, SPSS and other relevant statistical packages are to be taught to aid in the
analysis of student’s research. One seminar will be presented by the doctoral students in area
of ICT relevant to his discipline.

DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION
HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Political Science and Administration was created in 1976/77 as
one of the pioneer academic departments of the University of Maiduguri. At its
inception it was referred to as the Department of Political and Administrative
Studies, in the thei1 Faculty of Social Science and Law.
It continued with this name under the newly created Faculty of Social and
Management Sciences as from I 979/SO session. In 1982 the department was redesignated as the Department of Political Science and Administration. Under this
arrangement students who went through the programme were awarded a single
degree in Political Science and Administration. The areas covered by the programme
encompassed Political Science, Public Administration, Comparative Politics,
International Relations and Local Government studies.
In line with the clamour by the Federal Government of Nigeria to professionalise the
public service, sequel to the 1988 civil service reforms, the department in 1992
introduced a degree programme in Public Administration. Since then the department
has been offering the two B.Sc. programmes i.e. B.Sc. (Political Science) and B.Sc.
(Public Administration). Further, in line with the recommendations of the 1997
Presidential Visitation Panel, the Department was split in the 2003/2004 session, i.e.
Public Administration and Political Science, each going either way as separate
departments. The Department offers higher degrees in Public Administration such as
MPA (Masters Degree in Public Administration), MHPM (Masters Degree in Health
Planning and Management), M.Sc. (Public Administration) and Ph.D. Programme in
Public Administration.
BRIEF ON THE SCHOOL OF POSTGRADUTE STUDIES
The University of Maiduguri decided to establish the Postgraduate Degree
Programme with effect from 1981/1982 academic session, the School is headed by a
Dean who shall coordinate the Postgraduate study programmes of the University.
The management of the school is vested in the Board of Postgraduate Studies,
which shall coordinate Postgraduate academic activities through College/Faculty and
Departmental Postgraduate Committees.
The main objectives of Postgradute Studies in the Nigerian University system
according to National Universities Commission is to further develop the sprit of
enquiry in the graduate students through training in research in an atmosphere of
intellectual independence and individual creativity combined with a strong sense of
team work. In pursuit of this objective, teachers and students constitute a single
team in a well-defined and purposeful endeavour of human development.

scientific techniques and tools.
3. The inculcating in students an awareness of and sensitivity to environmental
factors and conditions and their impact on managerial/administrative

REGULATIONS GOVERNING THE CONDUCT OF EXAMINATIONS, GRADING
SYSTEMS AND DEGREE CLASSIFICATION EXAMINATION
Examination questions for courses offered by the Department are set by academic
staff teaching such courses. The draft questions are evaluated and moderated both
internally and externally. The Department conducts examination in all courses in the
department at the end of every semester. All examinations taken are initially marked
by the course lecturers and forwarded to the Head of Department for processing and
moderation by the external examiner as the case may be before forwarding to the
School of Postgraduate Studies for necessary action.
I. All the Department’s examinations shall be held in the rooms designated by the
Examination Committee;
2. Examination sitting arrangement for candidates shall be so arranged to ensure
that malpractice cases are eliminated;
3. The Postgraduate School shall supply to the invigilator at each examination room
answer booklets and other approved writing materials e.g. drawing paper, square
ruled paper and graph paper. While Logarithm tables, 4 figures and 5 figures
where appropriate and any other materials as approved by the Chief examiner
shall be provided;
4. No student who has entered for examination shall postponed or withdraws entry
for that examination without the consent of the Dean, School of Postgraduate
Studies, and such consent shall not be given except on medical grounds;
5. All medical certificates for students should come from the Chief Medical officer of
the University Health Services. The Chief Medical Officer shall not issue medical
certificates directly to the student concerned but to the Head of Department or
School of Postgraduate Studies;
6. The School of Postgraduate Studies shall arrange with the Chief Medical
Officer/Director of Health Services for one of the University Medical Officers to be
on call for the purpose of attending to needy candidates for the whole period of
the examination;
Invigilation
1. Invigilators for each session of examination shall be appointed by the
Committee on Examination from among the academic staff other than the
Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies and Head of Department, on the
recommendation of the Chief Examiners.

2. An invigilator shall be allocated an average of fifty candidates, provided that
there shall be at all times not less than two invigilators in each room in
addition to the various security personnel. One of the invigilators shall be
designated Chief invigilator for an examination;
Identification during Examination
No student shall be allowed into the examination room by Invigilators without
the students producing his or her identification card and display them
conspicuously on their desks; for newly admitted students who may not have
been issued with identification cards when examinations begin, they should
present an admission letter. Also, in order to avoid cheating in the
examination room by way of copying, all invigilators and security personnel
shall search students’ shoes, tissue papers, purses, dresses and pockets, and
also ensured that mobile phones, hand bags etc are not taken into the
examination hall;
Furthermore, in order to avoid impersonation during the examination, all
invigilators shall ensure that the identity number on the answer book and
attendance slip is the same as the one on the identity card. Likewise, the
photograph on the identity card should be the same as the student writing
the examination.
3.
The Chief Invigilator assigned to each examination room shall be there at lest
20 minutes before the commencement of the examination. While other
invigilators shall be in the rooms assigned to them not later than 30 minutes
before the commencement of the examination.
4.
The Chief Invigilator shall collect the following from the School of
Postgraduate Studies:

Question papers for the particular examination session;
Attendance sheets for the particular examination period;
At least five (5) days before the commencement of the examination, the
School of Postgraduate Studies shall send to all invigilators the following:

5. The time appointed for the examination in each paper as indicated in the
examination time table must be strictly adhered to;
6. Each of the sealed packets of question papers shall be held up and shown to

commencement of examination in the subject to which the packet relates;

7. It is the duty of the Chief Examiner in the subject to arrange for one of the
examiners in the paper to be present for the first thirty minutes of the
examination to clarify any doubts, in connection with the question papers.
However, in the case of doubts, reference should be made to the Chief
Examiner in the subject;
8. While the examination is in progress, no persons other than invigilators, the
attendants, the Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies or his representative
and Medical Officers shall be allowed to enter the examination room, provided
that the examiner in each paper shall be present during the first thirty
minutes of the examination and at such other times as may be requested;
9. At the close of the examination, candidates shall be asked to hand over their
answer scripts to the invigilator and not to leave them on the desk for
invigilators to collect. The Chief Invigilator shall check the candidates answer
books against the attendance list for the particular examination and arrange
the answer books together with four copies of the relevant question paper
and the copy of the signed attendance sheet and deliver them.

Absence from Examination
10. Candidates must present themselves at Examination for which they have
registered. Candidates who failed to do so for reasons other than illness or
accident or in exceptional cases deemed to have failed that examination. Misreading or clash of the Time-table shall not be accepted as a satisfactory
explanation for absence.
11. Any candidate who on account of illness, is absent from a University
Examination may be permitted by the Senate after considering a report from
the Faculty Board, to present himself/herself for such examination at a future
date provided that:
i)
the illness has been properly reported;
ii)
he or she has obtained a written excuse from the Chief Medical
Officer/Director of Health services or his designate which either;
iii)
is dated prior to end of the examination, or
iv)
provides evidence that the student was hospitalized during the
examination.
Use of Typewriter or Dictation of Answers
12. When a candidate in any University Examination, for special medical reasons,
needs to use a typewriter or dictate his/her answer, the School of
Postgraduate Studies
shall, after consultation with the Chief Medical

Officer/Director of Health Services, arrange for the typing or dictation of
his/her answer under supervision.
Examination Results
13. The proceedings of Board of Examiners and numerical marks awarded to any
candidate for any question or any paper of examinations are confidential and
are in no circumstances to be disclosed at any time to any other unauthorized
person. However, course letter grades may be released to students after
approval by the senate.
14. The results of the examination shall be tabled before School of Postgraduate
Studies, in a form to be determined by the Senate.
15. The results of University Examinations shall not be published before they have
been approved by the Senate.
Grading System
2.
a) Each course is graded on the basis of 100 total marks with proportions
for continuous assessment (consisting of tests, written assignments, case
studies and for such other means as may be appropriate) at end of course
examination. The basis on which marks are determined is announced at
the first meeting of each course. The minimum approved pass mark in
any course is 50%. Each course is graded out of a maximum of 100
marks and assigned appropriate letter grades and grade points as follows:

Grade Point Average (GPA)
Performance in any semester is reported using the Grade Point
Average (GPA). The GPA is the average of weight grade earned in the
course taken during the semester. The GPA is obtained by multiplying
the Grade Point attained in each course, and then summing these up,
and dividing the sum by the total number of credit units taken for the
semester.
c)
Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)
The CGPA is the up-to-date mean of Grade Point earned by the student
in programme of study. It is an indication of the overall performance
at any point in time in the training progrmme. To compute the CGPA,
the total of Grade Points multiplied by the respective credit units for all
semesters are added and then divided by the total number of credit
units for all courses registered by the student.

1.1 Philosophy
The Philosophy of the MPA is to broaden and deepen the intellectual exposure of the
students in core public administration courses so as to develop their capability to
analyze and apply the skills and knowledge acquired during training in solving
administrative problems in the public and private sectors.
1.2 Objectives
The MPA Programme is design to develop the students’ expertise in the functional
areas of Public Administration so that they advance the frontiers of Public
Administration theory and practice and enhance the contribution that the public
Administration could make to nation building.
1.3 Admission Requirement
Provided the University’s Matriculation requirements are satisfied, candidates for a
admission for the programmes should possess:

minimum of Second Class Lower Division.
A Postgraduate Diploma at Upper Credit Level in a relevant field from a
recognized University.
Five Credit passes including English Language and Mathematics at the

in the Social and Management Sciences are expected to possess a
PGDPA or PGDM for admission.

1.5 Dissertation:
Candidates are expected to write and submit a written dissertation in accordance
with the approved format. MPA dissertation shall be examined by a panel of

MPA 800 Research Methodology

Consist of all aspects of the research design the units of analysis, the multivariate
techniques, and the manner in which time and processional change is conceptualized
and measured. The multivariate techniques include sampling techniques, simple
correlative and other measures of association, analysis of variance, multiple
regressions and path analysis, basic probability and normal distribution will be
thought. Generally, the research design will cover areas such as cross sectional
model, a lagged cross-sectional model and a time series analysis; parametric and
non-parametric statistics.

Introduction to quantitative goals need in political science including topics in set

MPA 804 E-Governance in the Public Sector/Electronic Governance and
Administration

This course is designed to familiarize students with the approaches to e-governance;
five stages of e-governance in the application of Internet facilities in the planning,
implementation and evaluation of service delivery. It examines the threefold
classification of e-governance; e-governance as government to government,
government to business and government to citizens. Online service delivery, in
health care, education, agriculture, judicial administration, business, arts, culture,
rural and urban development, and local authority, state and federal administration,
and information communication management,. It further examines obstacles to egovernance and strategies for overcoming the barriers.
MPA 805 Public Policy Analysis
3 Units
This course is designed to prove the student with the techniques for policy analysis,
formulation, implementation and evaluation. The course examines the relationship
between bureaucrats, technical experts, interest groups and political executive in the
policy process.
MPA 806 Organizational Theory and Behaviour
3 Units
The course examines the nature of theory and reviews major administrative
theories. Emphasis will be on classical, neoclassical and modern theories. Theories
from behavioural science as they apply to the understanding of the role of the
individual as a member of organizations and to the effects of organization upon
members; organizational socialization, climate and effectiveness, power, authority
and decision-making in groups.
MPA 807 Public Financial Management
3 Units
This course exposes Participants to the theoretical and practical realms within which
governments strive to generate revenue for financing their development
expenditure. Issues of major concern in the course include nature, scope and
purpose of public finance, theories of state intervention in the economy, public good,
allocative/distributive/stabilization functions, intergovernmental fiscal relations,
aspects of national policies of hosting nations; economic, borrowing, debt, taxation,
expenditure operating and accounting policies; contemporary public budgeting.
MPA 808 Development Administration
3 Units
The course examines theories of development (economic growth, redistribution with
growth, basic needs, the Marxist conception, and the World Bank concept of the
development) decentralization and development and participatory development. It
considers approaches to rural development, the role of bureaucracy in third world
development, and constraints to effective development. Other issues examined
include population and development, culture and development. The concept of

MPA 809 Comparative Public Administration

The course covers the concept of comparison in public administration, and examines
the context and system of administration in selected developed and developing
countries. It emphasizes the political and policy-making roles of public
bureaucracies, the relationship between organized interests and public agencies and
the problems of bureaucratic accountability of political accessory in nation and the
globe.
MPA 810 Administrative Law

The course examines the growth and characteristics of Administrative Law, legal
safeguard over administration, judicial review of administration, administrative
procedure, and the Ombudsman. Case studies of legal adjustments of administrative
authority and individuals’ liberty, the distinction between public administration and
private action, personal liability of officers, and scope and limits of administrative
power.
MPA 811 Local Government Administration

The nature, scope, significance and development of local government, Evolution of
local government system in Nigeria, Management problems in local government,

M.Sc. Public Administration
2.1 Philosophy
The philosophy of the programme underscores the need to provide graduate
education and training in Public Administration, which broadens the intellectual
exposure of students in the discipline, develop their capacity to undertake rigorous
and quality research in the core areas of the discipline, and apply theoretical
understanding and research results to problem solving.

 To develop the students’ skills in critical thinking and analysis, logical
reasoning and research methodologies to improve their capacity to
undertaking rigorous and quality research and to make effective inputs in the
formulation and implementation of public policy.
 To develop the students’ expertise in the functional areas of Public
Administration so that they may advance the frontiers of public administration
theory and practice and enhance the contributions that Public Administration
could make to nation building.
2.3 Admission Requirements:
Provided the University’s Matriculation requirements are satisfied, candidates for a
admission for the programmes should possess:
a. A Degree in Public Administration, Political science and International
Relations from a recognized University with a minimum of Second
Class Lower Division.
b. Five Credit passes including English Language and Mathematics at
the O’Level.
2.4 Duration:
Candidates are to be admitted for full time study covering a minimum of four (4)
semesters and a maximum of six (6) semesters.
2.5 Dissertation:
Candidates are expected to write and submit a written dissertation in accordance
with the approved format. M.Sc. dissertation shall be examined by a panel of
examiners constituted as follows:

c. Main and Co-supervisor.
d. Representative of the Dean, (Postgraduate School).

COURSE DESCRIPTION
PAD 800 Research Methodology
3 Units
Consist of all aspects of the research design the units of analysis, the multivariate
techniques, and the manner in which time and processional change is conceptualized
and measured. The multivariate techniques include sampling techniques, simple
correlative and other measures of association, analysis of variance, multiple
regressions and path analysis, basic probability and normal distribution will be
thought. Generally, the research design will cover areas such as cross sectional
model, a lagged cross-sectional model and a time series analysis; parametric and
non-parametric statistics.
PAD 801 Quantitative Methods
3 Units
Introduction to quantitative goals need in political science including topics in set
theory and functional analysis. Generally, this course is designed to give students in

This course is designed to familiarize the student with the process of effective
manpower management. The main focus of the course is recruitment, selection,
training, motivation and labour management relations. Examples will draw from both
public and private sectors.

universal and regional) special emphasis will be placed on the structure and
management of these organizations. The concept of international civil service,

PAD 812 Performance Measurement and Management
The course examine the concept of public sector performance, input per hour, and
unit costs. It considers the planning, implementation and evaluation of performance.
It presents the human, management, and workload factors negating performance
and the major catalysts to improvement. The course considers how to measure
performance in federal, state and local authorities and their agencies.
PAD 813 Development Planning, Project Reparation and Implementation
This course examines the concept, models and types of plan; theories of planning,
policies of planning, programme planning and objectives and plan implementation. If
further considers development plan experience in Nigeria, the procedure for planning
and its implementation, and the essence of planning.
PAD 814 Inter-governmental Relations (IGR)
The principal objectives of the course are to acquaint students with various
conceptual models of federalism which help to explain the nature and working of
inter-governmental systems, to examines the forces of changes and the factors
which preserve federal systems, to understand the dynamics of non-governmental
relations, types of conflict and co-operation between various levels of government,
to explore the challenges of federal systems especially the problem of public finance,
ethnicity, civil rights and urban governance, to study policy development and
proposals for public management and the processes of federal policy
implementation.
PAD 815 Urban and Regional Planning
This course introduces the students to the spatial aspect of the contemporary urban
and regional units, their structural evolution overtime and the challenges they
present to a national procedure of planning development. Particular emphasis is
placed on the social, political and economic forces which lapse the land use
arrangements of Nigeria and regional units.
Ph.D Public Administration
3.1 Philosophy
The Ph.D programme is design to enhance education and training in the various field
of public Admi9nistration, with a view to develop and deepen the spirit of enquiry

3.2 Objectives


To provide training aimed at improving and upgrading the existing and
potential manpower resources needed for national development.

b. Part Time: A Minimum of Ten (10) semesters, a maximum of Twelve (12)
semesters.
c. For Extension beyond the specified maximum study period, an approval for
extension of the study period by Postgraduate Board shall be required.

in an urban area. Issues to be discussed include urban population problems, policy
formulation and implementation process; environmental control, social facilities such
