Coed / single sex schools
People say single-sex schools offer better education / teaching, but if there is a difference it is because they are
in richer areas.
Boys’ schools encourage sport more.
Positive aspects of New Zealand teachers
Very relaxed
If see a student in difficulty, will go to (towards) him, try to help.
William understood badly in biology (or equivalent), teacher came to him, did everything to encourage him.
In same way, if don’t understand a class you can just say so,
Can even criticise teacher’s method and they don’t get upset.
Indifference would upset them OR upset if student sleeping

What does William say about competition in New Zealand schools?
Normal to miss 2 weeks of classes to participate in a competition.
Competitive side / competition is very present but it is especially competition with oneself.
Trying to be the best for the good of the team and the school.
What will he always remember?

Only ask you to bring / need 3 things, a pencil, an exercise book and your head
School is based more on life than on knowledge / knowing things
For them, friendship is essential.

Why do you think Phosphore magazine chose to interview Yalda?
First Afghan woman to gain a study grant to go to France.
Wrote an incredible book about her time in France.
Kind of book that opens eyes on / to others and one’s own country / book that opens eyes of others’ own
country
Differences between France and Afghanistan
Everything surprised her in France: trains under the ground / lifts, rooms that go up and down
French women wear trousers, drive, cycle
In Afghanistan haven’t the right/ not allowed / can’t go to the market / shopping without a man.
In her country, they respect the aged but in France they put them in old people’s homes, where they die in
solitude.
In France, only think about earning money, selfish. Even if life beautiful in France, there are more depressed
people than in Afghanistan.

Describe the things that contributed to her gaining a study grant to go to France.
Sat her ‘bac’ in Pakistan where they had gone because of the conflict in Afghanistan.
She was not dreaming of marriage / She didn’t want marriage.
Sisters married at 15 to men they don’t like and understand importance of going to university – they helped
her.
Explain how she has changed since being in France.
No fear of expressing her ideas / no fear of saying her ideas
Can study, dream, find her own way / path
Has become an optimist because she sees that everything / anything is possible in life.
What is Yalda’s opinion about religion and life?
Being nice counts more than believing in a religion.
