New Study Released in Annals Of Internal Medicine Shows no Difference in
Nutritional Value Between Organic And Conventional Foods
Amidst a Nearly 24 Billion Dollar Increase in Spending on Organic Foods Since
1997, This New Study Finds no Definitive Nutritional or Safety Difference in
Organic Food Products Over Every Day Conventional Foods
Video News Story from American College of Physicians
Story Description:
A new study released in the Annals of Internal Medicine revealed that there is no
significant difference in organic and conventional foods as far as nutrition and safety are
concerned. The study included a systematic review of 17 human studies and 223
studies of nutrient and contaminant levels in unprocessed foods such as fruits,
vegetables, grains, milk, eggs, chicken, pork and beef.
The study did find that organic foods did lower the risk of finding detectable pesticide
residue but differences in risk exceeding maximum allowed limits were small. The study
also found that both organic and conventional foods shared a similar small risk for
bacterial contamination such as salmonella or eColi .
Sales of organic foods have increased dramatically is the US. Between 1997 and 2010
organic food sales have gone from 3.6 billion dollars to over 26 billion dollars.
