The classroom participation grade will be based on the following:
A. Speaking in Spanish
Completing all assigned dialogues, presentations and simulations.
Demonstrating command and mastery of Spanish by communicating only in Spanish.
Asking and answering questions in Spanish.
Putting into practice grammatical structures studied or prepared for class.
B. Attendance and make-ups:
Because a language course is sequential and builds upon previously learned
structures, it is essential to attend classes in order to receive a passing grade. Each
student is allowed only three (3) absences which will not affect the final grade. For each
additional absence, that is, (each absence after the third), two (2) full percentage points
will be deducted from the student’s final grade! It is each student’s responsibility to copy
notes and complete assignments missed during the absences. You must email me or a
classmate and make up participation assignments the class after your absence. I will
not grade make-up work after that.
PLEASE READ:
Any chapter test or quiz missed must be made up the class after the absence. If you
miss an assessment day, you will take it the day you come back. The missed
test/quiz day also counts against the student’s total number of absences. No makeup will be given for the oral part of missed tests for any reason, and students will be
given a make-up (that is, different) test from the rest of the class. Tests not taken
immediately after the absence will receive a zero. Students may not miss the final
exam. Please email your instructor if you have conflicting schedules regarding the
final exam.
All written assignments must be turned in by the designated due dates. No late work
will be accepted unless the student is absent. Students who are absent have one class
period to make up the work.
Final grades are FINAL and will not be changed. For example: earning a 69% will
not translate into a C.
Please do not attempt to turn in work not made up at the end of the semester or
after the assigned due date; it will not be graded.
You will be issued a mid-term grade report so that you may track your progress. If you
have any questions or concerns, please email me at: axbonsteel@salisbury.edu
Academic integrity – The best learning environment is one based on mutual respect and
trust. However, the desire to achieve a good grade without doing the necessary work
may tempt some students to cheat on exams or to represent the work of others as their
own. At Salisbury University, plagiarism and cheating are wrong and are considered acts
of “academic dishonesty” i.e. a deliberate and deceptive representation of one’s own
work.
Instances of academic dishonesty include all, but are not limited to the following:
*** Plagiarism – presenting as one’s own work, whether literally or in paraphrase, the
work of another author
***Plagiarism of instructor's marks on graded papers
*** Cheating on exams, tests, quizzes; the wrongful giving or accepting of unauthorized
exam materials; the use of illegitimate sources of information
*** Falsifying excuses for non-attendance or completion of assignments
Please refer to the section on plagiarism in the Salisbury University Student Handbook.
There are NO mitigating circumstances to justify academic dishonesty. If you are unclear
about what constitutes academic dishonesty or plagiarism, please ask. Ignorance is no
excuse. Discovery of academic dishonesty will bring stiff penalties, including a failing
grade for the assignment in question and possibly a grade of F for the course. The
maximum penalty at Salisbury University for plagiarism is possible expulsion from the
entire USM system, so for your own sake, maintain your academic integrity. Signing off
on this syllabus means that you agree to meet these expectations.
Students are responsible for all adjustments to their schedules. All changes such as drops
and adds must be made through the office of the Registrar. Failure to drop a course
officially or withdraw from school officially will result in the issuance of the grade of "F"
for all courses involved. Remember, simply stopping your attendance of a class is not an
official drop or withdrawal.
