EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Background: The Tanzania Coffee Research Institute (TaCRI) is a stakeholder owned and managed
Institute to support the rejuvenation of the coffee industry in Tanzania to sustainable prosperity.
TaCRI is in the process of implementing its second 5-year Strategic Action Plan, 2008-2013, working
in all coffee growing zones in Tanzania.
TaCRI is inviting applications for the following positions:
1. Extension Agronomists (2 posts)
Location:
TaCRI-Mwayaya sub-station in Kigoma or Lyamungu in Kilimanjaro Region
Reports to:
Programme Manager – Result 4
Key responsibilities:
The key function of Extension Agronomists is to support the rejuvenation of the coffee industry in
respective zones by promoting and disseminating appropriate and financially viable/proven
technologies to farmers and associated agencies; to facilitate two way linkages between researchers,
district extension staff and farmers by encouraging, for instance, the use of participatory research
techniques; to support the development of nurseries producing new varieties for replanting
programme; to develop and deliver training courses (training of trainers); to promote market
awareness, including an appreciation of cup quality.
Specific functions:
1 To support the development of the coffee industry by:
 Disseminating proven technologies to district extension staff, farmers and estates for
sustainable and profitable coffee production
 Identifying training needs and develop appropriate training modules and
 Promoting relevant and appropriate extension messages for growing coffee as a business
 Supporting the central research programme by facilitating on-farm and on-station research
 Supporting the development and up-grading of respective district, ward, farmer groups,
estates and other stakeholders’ clonal coffee nurseries
 Promoting market awareness including an appreciation of cup quality
 Monitoring and evaluating the implementation of Result 4 activities in respective zones
Qualification and Experience:
1 Academic qualification: At least a BSc degree in Agriculture/Agronomy/Horticulture/Rural
development. Applicants with Masters Degree will have an added advantage.
2 Work Experience: Should have a minimum of 2-3 years work experience with relevance in
extension and/or agricultural research activities with proven records of achievement.
Experience with the private sector and hands on participatory approach and especially working
with coffee farmer groups/in coffee industry will be an added advantage.
2. Assistant Accountant (One Post)
Location: Lyamungu
Reports to: Programme Manager – Administration Support Unit
Key responsibilities will include but not limited to:
1 maintaining proper books of accounts
2 recording all transactions in the respective books of accounts
3 preparing financial reports and various statements on monthly/quarterly/annual basis

preparing Bank reconciliations and Balance Sheet Accounts
custodian of accountable documents
make bank withdrawals and effect disbursements as the Institute agent
carry out any other duties as may be assigned by the Programme Manager, Administration
Support Unit.
Qualification and Experience:
1 Academic qualification: Holder of Advanced Diploma in accountancy or equivalent from a
recognized institution.
2 Work Experience: At least three years of relevant work experience
3 Must be computer literate with skill in Excel, spread sheets and easy to adapt to other
computer packages
3. Farm Manager (1 post)
Location: Lyamungu
Reports to: Programme Manager – Result 3
Key responsibilities:
Rejuvenation of abandoned farms, profitable management of both research and production fields, and
supervision of harvesting and primary processing of bulk coffees, making sure the quality attained in
the field is maintained during processing and marketing at farm-gate level.
Qualifications and Experience:
1 Academic qualification: Diploma or first degree in Agriculture and/or Agribusiness.
Specialization in perennial crops will be an added advantage.
2 Working experience: At least 5 years experience in farm management. Experience with
coffee farms will be an added advantage.
4. Laboratory Technician – Soils (1 post)
Location: Lyamungu
Reports to: Programme Manager – Result 3
Key responsibilities:
To conduct soil surveys over the coffee growing areas in Tanzania; to sample and analyze soils for pH,
EC, organic carbon, total and mineral nitrogen, available phosphorus, cation exchange capacity,
exchangeable basic cations and micronutrients. Also to analyze leaf samples for N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S and
micronutrients; and record the accrued data on a computer database.
Qualifications and Experience:
1 Academic qualifications: Form IV or VI with credit passes in science subjects, PLUS a
certificate or diploma in laboratory technology from a recognized institution.
2 Work experience: At least five years in an analytical laboratory. A hands-on experience in
sophisticated analyses such as atomic absorption and colour-grating spectroscopy will be an
added advantage
Requirements for all posts:
Linguistic skills: Strong communication skills and capacity to communicate concisely in both English
and Swahili
Computer skills: Candidates must be computer literate (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Pagemaker)
Interpersonal skills: ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and adjusting to new
requirements, teamwork, high degree of responsibility and trustworthiness and ability to work
independently.
