Senior Hydrologist

ICIMOD is a regional knowledge development and learning centre serving the eight regional member countries of the Hindu Kush-Himalayas (HKH) – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan,

China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan. We're working to develop an economically and environmentally sound mountain ecosystem to improve the living standards of mountain populations – now, and for the future.

ICIMOD has embarked on basin scale initiatives, which includes, basin-wide water availability and demand hydrology, climate change scenarios changes in the water availability due to cryospheric changes and regional hydrometerological information sharing.

ICIMOD is seeking to recruit a Senior Hydrologist with outstanding knowledge on river basin wide hydrology with particular knowledge of melt water generation and its downstream usages, climate model downscaling and climate change scenarios. H/She shall also have a thorough understanding of flood and flash flood hazards in the rivers basins, status of flood forecasting and early warning systems and transboundary cooperation preferably in the HKH region.

As a member of the Integrated Water Hazard and Management programme, the Senior

Hydrologist shall

Provide technical support to the Indus Basin Initiative of ICIMOD;

Provide technical support to the Project - The Hindu Kush-Himalayan Hydrological

Cycle Observing System (HKH – HYCOS): Establishment of a Regional Flood

Information System in the Hindu Kush-Himalaya;

Undertake the actions needed, including the organization of meetings, for the establishment of a regional “Framework for Cooperation” in the field of flood forecasting and warning;

Organize regional and national trainings and workshops as required by the project;

Conduct dialogue with national stakeholders in connection with the implementation of project activities; and

Provide general support to the Integrated Water and Hazard Management Programme

We expect the successful candidate to have a post graduate, preferably a PhD, in hydrology, flood management, or river basis management with at least ten years of varied experience in hydrology, integrated water resources management and good understanding of developments in international transboundary water cooperation and management;
