What makes New Day Tornado Shelters, Green

What makes New Day Tornado Shelters, Green?
Refuse  Refuge. A propane tank may serve a rural home for 50 or 60 years, but at some
point, it is put out of service and turns into cumbersome refuse. New Day Tornado Shelters
greatly adds value to this scrap metal, creating a refuge from tornados, reducing anxiety for
many citizens.
Reduce. The circular shape of these shelters means that material usage is optimized for interior
room and for strength.
Reuse. The scrap pressure vessels are converted into something useful without melting down
steel in a furnace. Carbon emission is near zero.
Recycle. All metal scraps not used in the shelter are turned over for recycling.
Lead containment. Decades-old paint on scrap LP tanks may well contain lead. Rather than
sand blasting 8 to 12 layers into dust, and rather than using chemicals to loosen the paint, our
method is to entrap the old paint within a jacket of concrete, thus preventing it from escaping
into the environment.
Coatings. After surface preparation, a ratio of water-based Latex paint and mortar mix is
applied, encapsulating potentially hazardous material. Next comes multiple coats of nonatomized, low-VOC exterior paint, transforming the appearance into a beautiful earth-toned
stucco look.
Go Local. For an American market, the product is domestically produced, with almost no
imported materials.
Waste not. Little manufactured material used in this shelter ends up in the trash. Even the
interior wall padding is made in part from what would otherwise become landfill. Also, this
company chooses to advertise on the Internet rather than in any paper phone books or
publications across the country.
Delivery. New Day is the only tornado shelter which is delivered by four-cylinder car. A small,
special trailer lifts the shelter and lays it over, toward the vehicle, and it is pulled through the
wind like a bullet. On site, the trailer stands the unit “to its feet”, and the shelter is rolled into
position by hand. This emphasis on minimalism is good for the earth and lowers the cost for
the end user.
