Post doc or doctoral researcher in strategies for climate change adaptation via green infrastructure

The Centre for Urban Ecology and Integrated Climate Change Adaptation will be funded by the Bavarian

Ministry of the Environment and Health. The Centre aims to develop integrated strategies for climate change mitigation and adaptation in Bavarian cities and towns and make significant contributions to the community of climate change science. The post doc will undertake research for development of strategies for climate change adaptation via green infrastructure and seek to answer questions such as: what is the potential of green infrastructure to adapt cities to a changing climate? How should green infrastructure be planned and designed for this purpose? How can green infrastructure be implemented in planning? The successful candidate should be able to develop scenarios for green infrastructure in case studies and assess their ecosystem services (e.g. thermal regulation and stormwater flows) via application of suitable modeling approaches.

The Centre for Urban Ecology and Integrated Climate Change Adaptation will be jointly led by the Chairs for

Energy Efficient and Sustainable Planning and Construction and the Chair for Strategic Landscape Planning and

Management. The appointment shall be for three years starting earliest from 1 st July 2013 on condition of grant approval by the Bavarian Ministry of the Environment and Health.

FURTHER TASKS FOR POSTDOCS:

 Scientific co-leadership of the Centre and management of interdisciplinary research projects.

 Contributions to further development of the Centre through other funding opportunities.

 Development of collaborative networks and communication with stakeholders and the public.

 Dissemination of results in formats tailored to different target groups, e.g. scientific and popular publications, development of guidance and policy briefs, seminars and conferences.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 University degree at the postgraduate level (M.Sc. or equivalent) in landscape or environmental planning, geography or a related programme, PhD for post doc applicants, with above average marks.

 Specific competencies in urban or environmental planning and/or urban ecology in connection with climate change adaptation.

 Working knowledge in geographic information systems and/or modeling.

 Excellent English and German skills in written and oral communication.

Candidates should be highly talented and motivated. Though the candidate will be expected to work independently, support will be provided from the Chair for Strategic Landscape Planning and Management, which undertakes cutting edge research on urban biodiversity, ecosystem services and green infrastructure planning in international and national projects. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to become part of an aspirational inter- and transdisciplinary research team which is anticipated to make significant contributions to the community of climate change science in urban areas.
