Introduction to attractions
Chinese Footbinding CultureMuseum
On display are 825 pairs of shoes designed for bound female feet,
numerous pictures, and associated items, all accompanied by detailed
descriptions. It is beyond the imagination of people today that centuries
ago the beauty of a Chinese woman was judged by the size of her feet,
more so than by the attractiveness of her face or body. The standard for
beauty was three-inch feet.

Zhaoming Academy
Facing south, the Academy is an example of traditional two-story architecture. The main
building is a library where the collection of books and
magazines on culture, social sciences, art, leisure and
tourism are available for tourists. In addition to conventional
reading rooms, Zhaoming offers an electronic reading room,
a lecture room, an art gallery and classrooms. In the center of
the courtyard is the Jiaowen Platform, an ideal place for
scholars to stay and write. In the courtyard there are four
ponds surrounded by towering ancient trees with refreshing
shade beneath.
The name of the Academy, Zhaoming, comes from the heir
apparent of the Liang Dynasty, who built the academy and studied in Wuzhen during the 6th century
A.D. It was here that he compiled Selected Prose, China’s first collection of prose and poems, later
recognized by scholars as one of the books a person must read to be considered educated.
Yida Silk Workshop
Yida Silk Workshop was founded in 1875 by Sheng Xuechang. By keeping profit margins low, volumes high
and providing great service, the shop became a name brand despite the tribulations of business. Over time,
Yida developed a completely vertical operation, owning the entire production process from planting
mulberry trees, raising silk worms, peeling cocoons, and spinning silk to weaving silk brocade. Its fame is
known all over Shanghai, Nanjing and Hangzhou.
Ling Yin Temple:
The Lingyin Monastery, or the Monastery of Soul's Retreat, is a famous
historical site of the West Lake. Here exists the Lingyin Monastery, a
famous ancient temple in China, in front of which there are Feilai Peak,
Cold Spring, Longhong Cave and precious rock cave arts and queer and
varied natural caves and gullies.
The West Lake
The West Lake is in the East China Sea near the mouth of the Hangzhou
Bay. The lake covers an area of 5.6 square kilometers. Its name, the
West Lake, originated during the Tang Dynasty from its lying to the west
of Qiantang County. The lake is also named after Xi Shi, a famous
ancient beauty, because of the apt comparison made between the two by
