Biography
I received the MSc and PhD degrees from Eindhoven University of Technology, Eindhoven, The
Netherlands in 1985 and 1989, respectively. My MSc research concerned the propagation of
electromagnetic waves in time-varying inhomogeneous media. My PhD concerned the protection of
high-voltage lines by using information from travelling waves. The link between the MSc and PhD
were obviously Maxwell’s equations.
After my PhD I started a post-doctoral research on design and reliability of industrial power system. It
was here I first came in contact with power quality, especially with voltage dips. During 1992 I spend
three months at Curacao to work on reliability of island power systems.
From 1993 through 1996 I was a lecturer at the department of electrical engineering, UMIST,
Manchester, UK, where I became heavily involved in teaching and started my own research group on
power quality. The power quality work and undergraduate teaching continued after my move to
Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1996. I further extended my work
through cooperation with a number of nearby areas like signal-processing and power electronics.
In 2003 I left Chalmers for STRI, a independent technology consultancy company and high-voltage
laborory company located in Ludvika, Sweden. At STRI I am in charge of all activities within the
technical area EMC and power quality. During my time at STRI this area became extended with
reliability studies and distributed generation.
In 2004 I accepted an offer to start as a guest professor at Luleå University of Technology, within the
EMC-on-Site group, where I have the scientific management of the research activities.
Through my almost 20 years of work on power quality, I have published a number of well-received
papers on power quality and two text books on the subject.
