David A. Zeeger Coal/Railroad Museum, Jenkins, KY

(10 minutes from Neon) The David A. Zegeer Coal-Railroad Museum is local history museum located at 102

Main Street in Jenkins, Kentucky across from the former Jenkins High School. The museum was dedicated on

May 9, 1998.

The museum is housed in an authentically restored 1911 train station which it shares with a bank.

Included in the museum's collection are photographs of historic and modern coal mining, actual tools and other artifacts used by the railroads and mines, and scrip formerly used in the company stores. All of the exhibits illustrate the history of Jenkins and the Consolidation Coal Company.

(45 minutes from Neon) The Lilley Cornett Woods National Natural Landmark and state wildlife refuge is one of Kentucky's few remaining tracts of virgin forest. Of the 90 species of trees and shrubs found here, the oldest pre-date the pilgrim's arrival at plymoth Rock. The guided hike involves a strenuous 900-foot gain in elevation.

North Fork Dam and Recreation Center, Pound, VA

(25 minutes from Neon) Built in 1966 as authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1960, the 154 acre lake is used for fishing, boating, camping, picnicking, hiking, and municipal water supply. Picnic area overlooks reservoir and is complete with restroom facility. The reservoir is managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers, but most of the developed recreation sites are managed by the Jefferson National Forest. Fish population in the lake includes, largemouth bass, crappie, catfish and sunfish. The lake is stocked by the Virginia Department of

Game and Inland Fisheries. Cane Patch campground is the center of the recreation activity on the lake. It has

33 camping sites with restrooms, showers and playground equipment. The Laurel Fork campgrounds provide a more primitive atmosphere for campers and is only accessible by boat.

Mountain Heritage Festival, Letcher County, KY

(15 minutes from Neon) The Letcher County Mountain Heritage Festival was first celebrated in 1982, and was coordinated by the county judge, fiscal court, and county treasurer.
