Caption: Chemical fertilizers and pesticides run off of agricultural fields into nearby lakes and
rivers, damaging sensitive ecosystems. Pollution that flows across the land or into groundwater
like this is more difficult to intercept than chemicals released from a pipe.

Caption: Scientists have recently been able to detect new types of chemicals in waterways,
including pharmaceuticals given to livestock and humans. We are only beginning to understand
the impacts of this cocktail of chemicals on nature and humans. Research has shown that the
amounts of synthetic estrogen found in streams can cause sex changes in frogs. This and other
synthetic chemicals may contribute to deformities increasing found in frogs in streams and
ponds.
