Deadly Start To Flu Season
Dec. 1, 2003 CBS NEWS and ASSOCIATED PRESS
In a Denver hospital, nurses and other staff have masked themselves against an epidemic
that's already claimed the lives of at least four Colorado children. A 2-year-old and a 21month-old died at the Children's Hospital in Denver in the past week, hospital officials said
Tuesday. In Larimer County, health officials said an 8-year-old boy died of the flu. "It
happened so quick and so sudden," Joseph's father, Scott Williams, said Tuesday. "He
was fine. He wasn't even that sick." A 15-year-old who had the flu died at Children's last
week and was believed to be the first flu death in the state this season.
So far, Colorado, Texas and Nevada lead the nation in confirmed cases and infectious
disease experts predict this could be the worst flu season in 30 years, CBS News
Correspondent Bob McNamara reports. The experts say as many as 70,000 deaths could
occur – nearly double the number of flu-related fatalities for an average year.
Six Children Dead in Fujian Flu Outbreak
Six children in England and Scotland have been confirmed as having died from the Fujian
strain so far this winter but there are no plans at present to immunise the up to 15m
children in Britain. Another child has died from the more expected Panama strain but flu is
also being investigated as a cause in at least three other deaths.

Drug-Resistant Bacteria, Georgetown Researcher Finds" -December 2001

against dangerous, and sometimes drug-resistant bacteria, a Georgetown researcher has
found. Two studies have shown that oregano oil—and, in particular, carvacrol, one of
oregano’s chemical components—appear to reduce infection as effectively as traditional
antibiotics.
