Feb. 7, 2006 Dear Parents of Applied Mathematics Students: One of the goals of the Applied Mathematics stream is to have students become technologically literate. Over the past few years, we have tried to accomplish this using the limited resources of the school. Recently, the Board of Trustees provided us with a grant to purchase technology to further this goal. Once we received confirmation of the money available, the school purchased graphing calculators that the students need to successfully complete the Applied Math 40S and 30S course. The graphing calculator that the school has chosen to use is the Texas Instruments TI-83 Plus. It is a calculator that performs the same operations as a scientific calculator in addition to graphing and statistical functions. With the money available from the grant, the school was able to purchase calculators. Each student in Applied Mathematics 40S and 30S will require the use of the TI-83 Plus calculator throughout the semester in which they take the course. The cost of graphing calculators ($100) may make them out of reach as an item to be purchased for some of our students. Therefore, we have some to lend. The student may borrow a calculator from the school for the semester in which they take to Applied Math 40S or 30S. Students choosing this option will have to present a cheque to the school for $100. The cheque should be post-dated as June 30, 2006. At the conclusion of the semester the students will return the calculator to the school. If the calculator is in good condition, the cheque for $100 will be returned to the student. If the calculator is not returned or is returned in poor condition, the school will cash the cheque to replace the calculator. Students choosing this option will assume ownership of the calculator and are able to take it home with them to complete assignments. It will be the responsibility of the student to purchase the batteries for the rental calculator. The batteries can be removed and kept by the student at the conclusion of the course. The calculators are an exciting component to the Applied Math curriculum and it is our hope that all students will enjoy using this powerful educational tool in class and at home. If you have any questions, please call the school at 638-4629. Sincerely, Dwayne Zarichny Principal Cam Bennet Applied Math 40S
