The British Red Cross is the largest voluntary humanitarian organisation in the world. It
promotes humanitarian values, and provides emergency help to people in short-term crisis in
the UK and overseas. Within the UK, the British Red Cross operates through 33,000
volunteers and 3,500 staff.
This is a significant role within the Trust and Statutory (TS) team of the High Value Giving &
Events department. The department also comprises the Major Donors, Corporate and
International Fundraising Committee teams. The TS team is targeted to raise £7m in 2012 and
is one of the largest of its kind in the sector.
Scope
A key focus for the team in 2012 is to develop income streams under a new Institutional
Funding Plan, working primarily but not exclusively with colleagues in our International Division
on international development and humanitarian assistance programmes. Implementation of the
plan is a joint priority for both the Fundraising and International divisions. Key income streams
under the plan include the DfID and the European Commission, Big Lottery Fund and Comic
Relief. A key focus for this post initially would be DFID and European Commission fundraising.
Dedicated and close working with specific programme managers and the Restricted
Fundraising Co-ordinator are also pre-requisites of the role.
Overall purpose of the post
To secure and manage global / thematic humanitarian and development funds primarily from
DFID, the European Commission and other Institutional donors for international development
and humanitarian assistance programmes. Provide stewardship of their funds, ensuring donor

requirements are met. Representing the team with specified programme managers, supporting
in particular regional delegates in their funding planning, making regular £500k+ solicitations.
To develop and manage a portfolio of significant internal and external relationships; advising
on funding strategies for Institutional donors in line with International Division’s priorities.
Leading by example; developing more junior team members’ skills where relevant so as to
make a significant contribution to team budget.
Main duties and responsibilities
1) To develop and manage a portfolio of ‘high value’ humanitarian and development
funding lines, developing and progressing multi-year funding strategies with major
Institutional funders
2) Develop and maintain good working relationships with donor organisations; network
internally and externally in order to maximise BRC knowledge of potential funders and to
increase their understanding of the British Red Cross’ work
3) Undertake detailed research into existing and potential new major funding opportunities,
carrying out donor mapping to inform the Institutional funding plan; analyse new trends,
donor policy / strategy documents to anticipate new funding opportunities
4) To lead on the development of large and complex funding proposals to Institutional funders
involving liaison with senior and programme managers, both internally and externally, as
well as the drafting of high quality targeted applications to meet funders’ requirements for
project outcomes, budgets and monitoring/reporting procedures.
5) To monitor and provide stewardship of funds secured, providing assurance support for
large and complex grants, developing and implementing necessary strategies with service
personnel to ensure donor requirements are met and compliance with BRC contract
management protocols
6) To respond to enquiries and provide specialist advice to operational colleagues on donor
policies in application as well as contract management, their formal requirements and other
technical issues relating to Institutional donors; to influence programme planning so as they
are well placed to meet funding criteria
7) To work closely with regional delegates overseas in order to support them to build
relationships with local funding delegations; ensure that the Institutional Funding plan
supports and is co-ordinated with International division priorities
8) To work closely and pro-actively with regional delegates as well as specified service and
finance colleagues to identify activity that meets funding opportunities. If needed, to work
with and support programme managers to build budgets and plans that will meet donor
criteria
9) To lead discussions at Director level concerning the funding options for new programmes
and to provide advice and guidance during the Planning and Budgeting cycle.

10) To line manage the work of junior staff such as Officers and Trainees that may be assigned
to them at the discretion of the Head of Trusts/Statutory; provide mentoring support to
junior staff and volunteers within the team.
11) Develop training and capacity building materials for Institutional funding and contract
management
12) To recommend changes to processes to enhance effective implementation of the
Institutional Funding plan
13) To ensure the fundraising database is accessed and updated as per agreed guidelines.
14) To uphold the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement
and to work within the British Red Cross’ Equal Opportunities Policy and to demonstrate
the competencies and behaviours set out in the British Red Cross’ Management
Development Framework
15) To represent the organisation within the fundraising profession as a whole
16) To keep the Head of Trusts/Statutory appraised of progress and undertake any other
duties as requested by the Head of Trusts/Statutory.

Capacity building experience in Institutional Funding planning, managing and
reporting**
Demonstrable experience of monitoring large complex grants from DfID, EU
(DEVCO & ECHO) and other Institutional donors as well as (preferably) high end
Charitable Trusts.**
Demonstrable experience of working effectively with a range of service delivery
colleagues to translate plans into funding proposals / facilitate the development of
detailed business plans for projects / programmes**
Demonstrable experience in developing funding strategies for a portfolio of
Institutional donors and / or specific programmes / areas of work
Experience of line managing staff
