Develop conceptual understanding of negative
real numbers by using temperature, loss of
money, loss of yardage in football, etc.
Use number line to develop skill of comparing
numbers.
Working in pairs, have one student make-up two
numbers and other student will write inequality
to demonstrate their relative sizes.
Discuss the idea that a measurement always is
expressed by a positive number. Use this idea
to explain the concept of Absolute Value.
Stress that there can be two, one or no solutions
to absolute value equations.

Use practical concepts to introduce the addition
of real numbers. Gains and losses of money,
gains and losses of yardage in football are good
examples that students understand.
Have students write rules for the addition of real
numbers.
Subtraction of real numbers is difficult for many
students because it is a two step process.
Difference is the key concept. A number line
helps students understand what they need to
understand.
Writing the process of subtraction and physically
changing signs and adding to find answer is
reliable for most students to learn process.

Multiply and divide real
numbers
Chapter References 2.5, 2.8
There are a few practical explanations for
demonstrating the sign rules for
multiplication but most students find the
process easy and learn the rules quickly
without an involved explanation. The text
approaches this in a matter of fact
manner. Being consistent becomes the
problem for students.
Division rules follow just as easily.

Simplify expressions involving
variables
The area model on page 100 is the best
way to introduce the Distributive
Property. Having students draw arrows
at first is a good technique.
Be particularly alert to the problem of
distributing a negative factor.
Students should be encouraged to make
up own problems for other students to
practice.

Ex. 1-11
Pg. 103-105
Ex. 1-73
Use of Distributive Law is used to
demonstrate why combining like terms is
valid, but students have difficulty
applying the process. Show what the
Distributive Property accomplishes but
spend a good deal of time identifying like
terms in expressions. Use of different
colors is good technique.
