Royal Liverpool Audiology Services
The Royal Liverpool Audiology Department is located in the Outpatients Department
on the ground floor at the top of the stairs leading to the staff and visitor restaurant.
The current Audiology Service Manager is Gill Donnelly who is also Associate
Directorate Manager for ENT/Audiology.
Opening times (except Bank & Public Holidays)
Monday to Thursday, 08:00 to 18:00, and Friday 08.00 to 17.30
(Audiology reception closes at 17:30)

Audiology Department Staff
We have 5 full time and 2 part-time Audiologists, 1 Hearing Therapist, 2 Assistant Audiologists
and 3 Administration & Clerical staff.
What does an Audiologist do?
An Audiologist is a professional trained to detect, assess and rehabilitate individuals with
hearing loss and/or balance difficulties.
How do I see an Audiologist?
New patients may be directly referred from GP’s to the Audiology Department if they fulfill the
following criteria:



The patients must be aged 60yrs or over
The patient must have had both ears de-waxed as necessary
There should be no evidence of:
-Active discharge
-Otalgia (pain) affecting either ear
-Vertigo where it is of sudden onset and is a new problem
-Sudden deterioration in hearing
-Perforation of the ear drum
All other patients are referred via an ENT Consultant.
All NHS Hearing Instrument users may contact the Department directly.
What does an Assistant Audiologist do?
As the title suggests, the assistant is engaged in important work that helps the
Audiologist to deal with less routine issues. This mostly relates to the department’s
stock management and routine hearing instrument replacements and repairs.
What does a Hearing Therapist do?
A Hearing Therapist is a highly specialised Aural Rehabilitationist trained in:




Counselling patients to adjust to hearing loss
Assessing the rehabilitation needs of patients with tinnitus and balance
problems to provide a programme of care
Maximising hearing ability with audiotory training and communication skills
Managing patients with auditory processing disorders

Department Services
We offer a wide range of adult audiological services:

Initial hearing assessment (with fitting where applicable)
Digital hearing aid fittings, adjustments and repairs
Hearing reassessment with exchange from analogue to digital
Analogue hearing aid repairs
Home visits for housebound patients

Paediatric to adult transition
Group appointments
Vestibular Rehabilitation
SARA Clinic
We are also a teaching department, instructing both under/post-graduates in
Audiology while on clinical placements
Repair Services
Repair sessions are held within the Department on a daily basis, these are offered
within a one week period and are accessed by appointment only, unfortunately we
are unable to see patients on a drop-in basis any longer. You can book an
appointment by phoning the Department on 0151 706 2533 between 08:30 – 1230 each week day.
Garston Treatment Centre, Church Road.
A new NHS treatment centre opened in April 2011 on Church Road at Garston. This
includes a purpose built Audiology suite which is located on the first floor. Audiology
staff from the Royal Liverpool University Hospital operates this service.
Full Audiology services are provided. Opening times are the same as for the
Audiology service at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

Lost Hearing Aids
The Department now charges for lost hearing aids. There is an administration fee of
£50. In the unfortunate event that you do loose your hearing aid, please phone us
to book an appointment to replace your lost hearing aid.
Swim plugs
It is possible to have swim moulds made at the Department for a charge of £15 per
ear. If you are currently under the care of ENT because you have had mastoid
operation, it may be possible to obtain swim plugs free of charge with a referral
letter from one of the ENT Doctors.
Home Visits
If you have been deemed house bound by your GP (i.e. those unable to attend
hospital appointments, even by ambulance), then it is possible to arrange for a
member of our staff to come and see you in your home. For more details regarding
the home visit service, please contact the Audiology Department on 0151 706
2533.
Transport
If you require Ambulance Transport to attend your appointment, you should book
this through your GP surgery when you receive your appointment date.
