Strong earthquake rattles Aceh, kills at least one

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the area of Singkil Baru in Aceh at around 1 a.m.
on Tuesday, killing at least one person and causing a panic among residents.
The quake reportedly lasted for up to 30 seconds and was felt by residents in
Subulusalam, Aceh and Medan as well as other cities in the surrounding region.
The tremor destroyed the Subulussalam Midwives Academy building and a house
next to it.
Subulussalam Mayor Muara Sakti confirmed that at least one person, a 12-year-old
boy, had died in the incident.
"The victim lived in the house that collapsed," Muara said Tuesday as quoted by
Tribun Medan.
According to North Sumatra Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, the
epicenter of the quake was 59 kilometers northeast of Singkil Baru, Aceh, at a depth
of 78 kilometers below sea level.
