Severe flood events have caused extensive damage to a number of urban areas around
Ireland over the past decade. Increasing development and the prospect of climate
change could combine to significantly increase the risk of flooding over the coming years.
The objective of this Seminar is to examine in a practical manner the role of urban
hydrology in managing or reducing flood risk in Ireland’s towns and cities. Issues to be
considered will include the design and benefits of sustainable urban drainage systems
(SUDS) and runoff control techniques, the management of urban stormwater, the
application of sustainable planning and development, modelling of urban hydrology and
drainage, and the potential impacts of climate change on the urban flood regime.
