Eppleton’s Great Sacrifice.
Heroes who have died for King and Country
“Their name liveth for evermore”.
Few parishes in the United Kingdom have more nobly supported their King and country in the Great War than
has the parish of Eppleton. According to the Eppleton Church Magazine close upon 100 men belonging to the
parish have made the supreme sacrifice on behalf of the cause of liberty and of civilization. The sad but
glorious record is as follows:
James Thompson, killed in action in France, July 1st, 1916. His home was 48 William Street.
George Clarkson Hunter, died Feb.15th, 1919. His home was 52 Jane Street.
Leslie Strachan, killed in action in France, Sept. 18th, 1918. His parents live at 15, Lady Street.
Robert Cook, killed in action in France, Nov. 5th 1918. His home was at 28 Caroline Street.
John Harrison Cummings, killed in action in France, August 24th, 1918. His home was at 13 Princess Street.
Dixon Garrett, died of pneumonia, Jan. 13th, 1919. Parents live at 21 Low Downs Square.
John White, drowned in the sinking of the Hampshire on January 5th, 1916. His parents live at 16, Miner
Street.
William Allan Curry, Honourable Artillery Company, killed in action in France on Oct.9th, 1917. His
widowed mother lives at 50 Regent Street.
Ernest Anthony Smith, killed in action in France on Nov. 1st, 1918. His parents live at 1 Lyons Street.
James Kirby, killed in action, May 27th, 1918. His parents live at 25 Jane Street.
George William Lawson, killed in action in France, Oct. 29th, 1918. Parents live at 4 Jane Street.
Joseph Frederick Norman Lewins, killed in action in France, Oct. 23rd, 1918. Parents live at 5, George
Street.
Thomas Higginson, killed in action in France, Oct. 11th, 1918. Parents live at 31, Jane Street.
Edward Hunter, killed in action in France, Sept. 30th, 1918. Parents live at 26 Jane Street.
James Murray, killed in action in France. His mother lives at 35 Market Street. His wife at 20 Victoria Street.
Thomas Pratt, killed in action in France. His parents live at 15, William Street.
John Hutchinson, killed in action in France, May 2nd, 1918. His father lives at 52 Caroline Street.
Joseph William Tate, killed in action in France on Sept. 10th, 1918. His parents live at 44 Jane Street, and his
wife at Low Down Square.
Samuel Waller, killed in action in France on Sept. 15th, 1918. His wife lives at 2, Co-operative Buildings.
Charles Aspinall, killed in action in France on Sept. 19th, 1918. His parents live at 12, Railway Terrace, and
his wife and child at 23 Jane Street.
Thomas Straughan, killed in action in France on Sept. 18th, 1918. His parents live at 44 William Street.
Charles Walton Anderson, killed in action in France, Aug. 26th, 1918. His wife lives at 32 Lyon Street and
his mother at Leverson’s Row.
Thomas Atkinson, West Yorks., killed in action in France on Oct. 8th, 1917. His wife and two children live at
51 Downs Lane.
Thomas Mallaburn, 18th D.L.I., killed in action in France, June 28th, 1918. His parents live at No. 3, Jane
Street.
James Joyce, West Yorks., killed in action in France, July 21st, 1918. His parents live at 17, William Street.
George Prince, R.F.A., died on July 2nd, 1918. Military funeral at Eppleton Parish Church on July 9th. His
parents live at 24 Lyon Street.
Ralph McGregor, officially reported missing, but there seems to be no doubt that he was killed in action in
March, 1918, in France.
John Robert Wheatley, D.L.I., died of wounds, May 31st, 1918, in French Hospital. His parents live at 19
Byer Street.
Thomas Arthur Stanwix, Army Veterinary Corps, died in Salonica on June 12th, 1918 of pneumonia. His
wife and two daughters live at 142 Houghton Road.
John Mallen Scarth, killed in action in France on March 22nd, 1918. His wife and three children live at 5,
Regent Street.
Pte. F.G. Southgate died of wounds in France, March 23rd, 1918. His wife and child live at 111, Houghton
Road.
William Wood, killed in action in France. His wife lives in Murton. His parents live at 11, Lindsay Street, in
this parish.
Lance-Corpl. William Nichol, 15th D.L.I., wounded in France, and died Feb. 3rd, 1916 in hospital there. His
parents live at 16 Jane Street.
Pte. John Storey, 6th Batt. Yorkshire Regiment, killed in action at the Dardanelles on Oct. 4th, 1915. His
parents live at No. 24 Henry Street.
Henry Armstrong, aged 19, wounded in France on March 19th, died at the Whitechapel Hospital, London, on
Sept. 2nd, 1916.
Charles William Hall, of Percy Street, reported killed in action in April 26th, 1915.
Robert Guy, enlisted on Aug. 24th, 1914. He died in July. The funeral took place at Eppleton Church, July
30th.
Corpl. Michael Donley, D.L.I. killed in action.
Thomas Gibbon, aged 25, whose parents live at 7 Frances Street. Killed in action at the Dardanelles on Nov.
3rd, 1915.
Pte. Thomas Berrisford, 2nd Batt. Yorkshire Regt., killed in action Sept. 25th, 1915. His wife and five
children under 15 years of age, live at No. 18, Jane Street.
Walter Borthwick, killed in action April 26th, 1915. His parents live at No.4 Barrington Terrace.
John Storey, 15th Batt. D.L.I., was killed in action in France on Sept. 25th, 1915. His parents live at Hutton
Street.
Robert Thompson, 6th Yorks Regt., was killed in action at the Dardanelles on Dec. 12th, 1915. His wife and
two children live at 37 High Downs Square.
George Atkinson was killed in action at the Dardanelles on Nov. 16th. 1915. His home is in Railway Terrace.
Michael Lawson, Machine Gun Corps, died from wounds in France. Nov. 21st, 1916. His wife and two
children live at 11, Princes Street.
Richard Hartill, R.F.A., died from wounds in France, July 14th. 1916. His wife and two children live at 4
Edward Street.
William Atkinson, West Yorks., killed in action Oct. 30th, 1915. Parents live at 108a Houghton Road.
Norman Cartwright, a former chorister of Eppleton Church, killed in action in France in July 1916.
George Anderson, N.F., killed in action July 18th, 1917, in France. He lived at 30, Percy Street.
William Pickering, killed in action Aug. 21st 1915. His home was 29, William St.
Pte. Austin Hall, D.L.I., killed in action on Sept. 17th 1915. His parents live at 121 Houghton Road.
Corpl. Thomas Valks, R.A.M.C., killed in action in France, April 16th, 1917. His parents live at 47 Jane
Street.
Sgt. John William Geddes, R.F.A., killed in action in France on Dec. 12th, 1916. His parents live at No. 1
Blossom Street. He leaves a wife and two children.
Pte. John Hourigan 7th East Yorks., killed in action in France, Feb. 7th 1917. His parents live at 28, William
Street.
Sergt. James Heslop Dawson, 22nd D.L.I., who was killed in action in France on Tuesday, March 13th, 1917.
He leaves a wife and child.
Nathaniel George, 10th Yorks., killed in action in France April 11th, 1917. His parents live at 23 William
Street.
John Bolton, 15th D.L.I., wounded in France on May 8th, died May 9th, 1917. His wife and two children live
at 32 Downs Square.
Norman Armstrong, King’s Own Royal Lancaster, killed in action April 30th, 1917. His parents live in South
Market Street.
Nicholas Simpson, N.F. killed in action in France on May 14th, 1917. His wife and three children live at 13,
Dene Street.
George Gibson, 18th D.L.I., killed in action in France on May 9th, 1917. He leaves a wife and six children,
who love at 34, Fairy Street.

Walter Bennett, 1st East Yorks, reported missing April 9th, 1917; reported killed June 9th, 1917. His wife and
child live at 7, Maudlin Street.
Ralph Richardson, Yorkshire Regt., killed in action in France, Sept. 15th, 1916. His wife and child now live
at 18 Willis Street.
Thomas Pearson, 14th D.L.I., killed in action in France, July 9th, 1917. His wife and three children live at 20,
Edward St.
Alfred Purvis, R.A.M.C., killed in France, June 28th, 1917. His parents live at 11, Lyon Street.
Sergt. William Henry Bowden, 2nd Yorks., killed in action in France Aug. 3rd, 1917. His wife and two
children live at 21 Queen Street.
Lance-Corpl. Fenwick Squires, 14th D.L.I., died from gas poisoning, Dec. 21st, 1915 in France. His home is
24 Nicholas Street.
Gunner Isaac Ferguson killed in action in France, March 29th, 1916. His wife and child live at 14, Francis
Street.
Charles Hunter, 15th D.L.I., killed in action on July 1st, 1916. His parents live at 25 Jane Street. The wife
lives at 36 Jane Street.
Fred McCune, D.L.I., killed in action in France, July 1st 1916. He was the only son of a widowed mother now
living in Market Street.
Ralph Hogg, N.F., killed in action in France, July 1st, 1916. His wife and child live at 44 Downs Lane.
William Birbeck, who mother lives at 11 Lady Street, gassed in France and died the same day in July 1916.
Anthony Hodgson, 11th Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders, died from wounds in France on Sept. 17th, 1916.
His wife and six children live at 37 Jane Street.
Taylor Storey, 6th Yorks. Regt., his wife and two children live at 20 Maudlin St., and his parents at 34 Henry
Street. He was killed in action in France in September 1916.
Robert Storey, 6th Yorks., whose mother lives at 3 Dene Street. He was killed in action in France in
September, 1916.
Joseph Teed 8th D.L.I., was killed in action in France in September, 1916. His sisters and brother live at 12
Dene Street.
Nicholas Oldham, 15th D.L.I., killed in action in France on July 1st, 1917. His parents live at 53 Jane Street.
James Robert Pearson, 6th Yorks., killed in action in France on Sept. 13th, 1916. His wife and seven children
live at 43 Jane Street.
Albert Downey, 6th Yorks., killed in action in France in September, 1916. His parents live at 27 Jane Street.
Peter Passmore Grimshaw, 3rd Yorks., died from wounds in France on Sept. 17th, 1916. His wife lives at 5
Back Market Street.
Joseph Wheatley, Yorks Regt., died from wounds Sept. 14th, 1916. His parents live at 19 Byer Street.
Thos. Henry Nelson, 6th Yorks. Regt., killed in action in France, Sept. 28th, 1916. His parents live in

Alexander Ross, 6th Yorks., killed in action in France, Sept. 28th, 1916. His wife and two sons live in

Joseph Lowry, 6th Yorks. Regt., killed in action in France, Sept. 27th, 1916. His wife and child live in Percy

William Paisley, Border Regt., killed in action July 30th, 1916 in France. Parents live at 38 Barrington
Terrace.
Isaac Dixon, 13th D.L.I., killed in action in France, Sept. 19th, 1916. Parents live at 41 Jane Street.
Edmund Anderson, D.L.I., killed in action in France, Oct. 1st, 1916. Parents live at 49 Downs Lane.
Robert Lawson reported killed in action in France on July 31st, 1917. He was a sidesman of our church, a
Sunday School teacher, and a member of the choir.
John Ferguson Worthington, 6th Yorks., killed in action in France, Oct. 4th, 1917. His wife and three
children live at No.4 Quarry Row.
Arthur Milton Wellock, D.L.I., killed in action in France on Oct. 4th, 1917. He leaves a wife and a daughter;
their home is at 8 Church Road.
Samuel Wilkinson, East Yorks., killed in action in France on October 10th, 1917. He leaves a wife and one
child. Parents live at 11 Miner Street.
John William Shannon, East Yorks., killed in action on June 25th, 1917. Parents live at 5 Low Down Square.
Ruben Evans, R.A.M.C., killed in action in France on Aug. 15th, 1917. His parents live at 19, Lindsay Street.
Stanley Chicken, R.A.M.C., killed in action in France on Oct. 20th, 1917. His mother lives at 8 Percy Street.
James Davey, R.F.A., killed in action in France on Nov. 3rd 1917. His wife lives at 92 Caroline Street.
John Thomas Hawxby, N.F., killed in action in France on Oct. 17th, 1917.
Bomb. Thomas Matthews, R.F.A., died of wounds in France, August 30th, 1917. His wife and four children
live at 40 Fairy Street.
Ernest James Lambton lost his life by sinking of the transport Calliope, July 9th, 1917, aged 22 years. He
leaves a wife and two children.
John George Ashcroft, killed in action October 5th, 1918. His parents live at 25 Low Downs Square.
