Prostate SPORE
Application for Seed Grant
Information for Faculty Investigators
The University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center Prostate Specialized Program of
Research Excellence (SPORE) Operating Committee invites applications requesting
support for the investigation of prostate cancer. The Prostate SPORE is a five-year grant
funded by the National Cancer Institute. Awards will be made for projects exploring a new
direction for a program; nurturing an innovative idea; exploring an unconventional but
potentially important hypothesis; or testing the feasibility of a research protocol. For funding
consideration, proposals must be related to prostate cancer and preferably translational in
nature although this is not required. Previous experience in prostate cancer research is not
necessary. We are seeking research projects directed toward understanding the
mechanisms involved in prostate cancer development or a cure of prostate cancer.
Eligibility: Applicants must be an assistant professor level or higher on any track. Instructor
level is eligible to apply. Investigators with Cancer Research Committee (CRC) funding are
not eligible to apply.
Successful applicants become members of the UMCCC Prostate SPORE and participate in
SPORE meetings. In addition, seed grant investigators have the opportunity to use the
Prostate SPORE Tissue Core and Biostatistics Core. The Tissue Core is a valuable
resource which provides a wide range of high quality assured prostate tissue samples and
derived molecules; clinical and pathology data linked to molecular studies; and expert
pathology consultation for the purpose of designing research projects. The Biostatistics
Core can provide expertise with experimental design and data analysis.
Seed grant investigators meet with SPORE clinical and basic science mentors twice during
the year. In addition, all SPORE investigators and core directors are available to act as
resources and provide guidance to seed grant investigators. Seed grant investigators
present their research results once per year to the Operating Committee.
Awards will be made for up to $10,000. This grant does not provide for travel, office
supplies, copying, faxing, postage or other A-21 restricted expenses. Funding will be
effective 11/1/09. Awards are for one year. Funding for a second year will require
reapplication. Past awardees have used this mechanism to fund student researchers.
All applicants will receive reviewer comments. Applications will be judged by the Prostate
SPORE Operating Committee on the following.
Significance: The potential significance of the research proposed for the near future.
Approach: Adequacy of methods to address question.
Innovation: Originality and novelty of the experimental design as it relates to prostate
cancer research.
Plausibility: Likelihood of accomplishing project goals within the grant period.
Potential: Likelihood that completion of research will allow investigator to compete for
further R01-level funding.

Candidates must submit the attached application form by Monday, September 21, 2009. A
Curriculum Vitae (CV) or NIH biosketch is required for each investigator on the application.
The application should reflect a concise plan of the research to be performed during the
proposed project period. A grant application involving humans or animals may be
approved, but funds will not be committed until appropriate approval is received. Final
funding decisions are at the discretion of the SPORE leadership.
Applications may be found on the UMCCC Prostate SPORE website at

Interested applicants are encouraged to visit the NCI SPORE web page
(http://spores.nci.nih.gov/ ) and read the SPORE application guidelines under the
“Information for Applicants” tab.
