YOUTH WATER STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM
The Youth Water Stewardship Program (YWSP) was designed by the Fountain Creek Watershed
Greenway Fund and funded by the Edson Foundation to change the lives of young people by fostering a deep,
lasting, and knowledgeable relationship with water. The preservation of our watershed is critical to assure a
healthy and sustainable community, so by using the drive, enthusiasm, and creativity of under-served kids,
YWSP offers hands-on, authentic learning experiences to aid the community in their efforts to protect and
sustain our watershed. YWSP is recruiting middle and high school students across Colorado Springs and
Manitou Springs who show eagerness and initiative. This program gives young individuals a chance to achieve
beyond their expectations, foster relationships across diverse backgrounds, and impact lives in meaningful
ways. Further, this kinesthetic learning experience teaches young people to value nature and make sound
decisions about the environment and the role they play in it.
YWSP is organized in four parts and is designed to meet Colorado Department of Education Academic
Standards and provide “21st Century learning skills.” Participants can receive service hours and an award
certificate upon completion of parts 1, 2, and 3 with the opportunity to serve on a student led board.
Activities include, but are not limited to:
Part 1 - Learn It:
The educational piece aims at teaching students: where our water comes from, what types of threats exist to
the water quality in the Fountain Creek Watershed, what storm water runoff is, and how flooding (especially
after the Waldo Canyon fire) impacts our streams. The water management professionals from Colorado
Springs Utilities, the City of Colorado Springs, and the Catamount Institute will provide educational
presentations1.
Part 2- Work It:
This involves active field participation in areas such as: water quality testing, a creek side clean-up, a stream
bank stabilization project, or a Waldo Canyon burn area restoration project. Field events will be coordinated by
several organizations – the Fountain Creek Watershed Greenway Fund (“Greenway Fund”), Rocky Mountain
Field Institute (RMFI), and the Coalition for the Upper South Platte (CUSP), and the Colorado Water Institute.
Field events will be available for participants to actively make a difference in protecting the Fountain Creek
waterway and its tributaries.
Part 3- Share It:
This enables the students to share with the community what they have learned. Participants can complete this
requirement in many creative ways such as: producing informative pamphlets, posters, and materials to hand
out to fellow citizens, posting blogs on social media, presenting at school assemblies or school
announcements, etc. High school students in video classes will be recruited to produce mini-documentaries to
be broadcast on school news channels, the Library Channel, Channel 18, YouTube, and other venues.
Students are also encouraged to use art or poetry as a medium to share this unique experience with their
community with the opportunity to participate in an auction that will aid in future fund raising efforts.
Part 4-Sustain It:
This provides selected students the opportunity to participate on a Student led Board. The board members will
get to experience real-life decision making. Two Boards will be formed – one for Middle School students and
one for High School students. The Boards will be responsible for assisting with Youth Water Stewardship
Program recruitment, brain-storming sustainable practices to maintain and enhance the Fountain Creek
Watershed in the future, and for fundraising ideas and efforts to continue the program. The Student Boards will
present their ideas and projects to the Fountain Creek Watershed Greenway Fund Board at the end of the
program, and receive a $50 stipend for each Student Board member.

The presentations from all four entities have been designed to meet Colorado Department of Education Academic Standards and
provide “21st Century learning skills.”
