I. FOOTNOTES/NOTES.
Footnotes (bottom of the page) and notes (separate page at the end of the text of the essay) serve several
purposes:
(a) to indicate the exact source of every quotation used;
(b) to acknowledge indebtedness to others for opinions or ideas;
(c) to give authority for a fact that the reader might be inclined to doubt;
(d) to provide additional explanations or material that might otherwise clutter the text of the
paper or interrupt the flow of argument (do not overuse).
