Brenda Prouser Imber, Ph.D. has been a Lecturer at the English Language Institute for over 20
years. She has a B.Sc. in English Language & Literature from Carnegie Mellon University, an
M.A., an M.Ed. and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. Her major areas of interest are
pronunciation, speaking, and listening, teacher training, and cross-cultural communications for
advanced non-native speakers in professional settings.
At the ELI, Brenda specializes in teaching oral communication skills, and conducts workshops
and practicums for students training to become graduate student instructors (GSI) /teaching
assistants. She is the coordinator for the GSI training for LSA international graduate students,
and the GSI training within the Ross School of Business Teacher Development Program for
doctoral candidates. In the summer, she teaches Case Studies in the English for Business
Studies program for internationals entering the Ross Business School MBA degree program.
In addition to her lectureship at the ELI, Brenda served as President of the Michigan State
affiliate of TESOL (MITESOL). She is also the founder of Cross-Cultural Communications (CCC,
Inc.), a private consulting company that develops training programs for corporations, law
enforcement agencies, health care service providers and educators.
Dr. Imber’s publications and presentations focus on training ESL and ELF (English as a Lingua
Franca) teachers on integrating pronunciation instruction into multi-skills classes. She and
Maria G. Parker (Duke University) co-authored the text and student workbook, Integrated
Lessons: Pronunciation & Grammar, (University of Michigan Press. 1993)

Carson Maynard is a research associate and intermittent lecturer at the English Language
Institute of the University of Michigan. He has a BA in Linguistics from Duke University and an
MA in Linguistics from the University of Michigan. His research interests include pronunciation
teaching, conversation analysis, and the use of technology in language learning.

Aaron Ohlrogge is a test developer at the English Language Institute at the University of
Michigan. He has a BA in Linguistics and English at the University of Michigan, and is currently
pursuing an MA-TESOL from Michigan State University. His research interests include academic
vocabulary, formulaic language, writing and speaking assessment, and corpus linguistics.
