The IPK Gatersleben and Martin-Luther University establish a graduate school entitled “Yield Formation in
cereals – overcoming yield-limiting factors”. The school has been funded under the Joint Initiative for Research
and Innovation 2012 program by the Leibniz Association, and represents the IPK and MLU’s goal of establishing a
joint graduate school which takes advantage of both institutions’ academic excellence in crop plant research. The
graduate school is a structural component of the newly established “Science campus Halle plant-based
bioeconomy”.
Announcement
Lecture within the doctoral program of the graduate school
“Yield Formation in cereals – overcoming yield-limiting factors”
All PhD students are invited to attend lectures and scientific and non-scientific courses
(subject to availability of places in the courses) within the IPK Graduate Program of the
graduate school.
Lecture title
Nutrient Sensing in Plants
Speaker: Prof. Dr. N. v. Wirén
(Dept. PZB/ MPE;

Time: Thursday, January 29, 2015, 3.00 p.m.
Place: lecture hall, communication center, IPK campus
Abstract: In arid and nutrient-poor environments plant survival depends on the plant’s
ability to efficiently explore the soil on the search for water and minerals. To guide parts of
the root system to nutrient-rich sites, roots need to sense local nutrient availabilities and
connect nutrient signals with developmental responses. This lecture will cover the basics of
nutrient sensing in plants and introduce sensors and regulatory modules involved in nutrientdependent molecular signalling events and related developmental responses.
