NEAR-ISOGENIC LINES OF INBRED Hi27
Hawaii Foundation Seeds
The following near-isogenic lines (NILs) were bred in Hawaii and based on tropical inbred
Hi27. Each represents six or more backcrosses. Hi27 is known or believed to be of the following
genotype:
A1 A2 b1 Bz1 C1-I C2 Mv1 P1-ww Pl1 R1-r Pr1 Y1
Hi27 is a tropical yellow flint inbred that carries the anthocyanin-inhibitory allele C1-I. It was
selfed out of an Indian sib-line CM104 and converted in Hawaii to gene Mv1 (3L-78) for resistance to
maize mosaic virus. CM104 was bred in India under the Rockefeller Cooperative Maize program
(1955) out of Amarillo Theobromina, a Colombian line of Cuban Flint origin (pedigree: A Theo 21
(B)-6#-15-7#). Hi27 has wide tropical use and adaptability and is highly tolerant of most common
diseases and insects. It is registered (PI 593009) and stored by USDA in Ft. Collins as PL-183 (see
CropSci. 37:631-2, 1997
