Action Photography: Close-up photography of a player(s)/team during game play that requires
precise angles and a telephoto lens
Candid Photography: Close-up/portrait photography of individuals/groups in their environment
Assignment Learning Goal:
I will learn action photography and candid photography techniques and understand how to
recognize and identify various styles. I will be able to demonstrate my understanding of these by
documenting GPSS sports teams and clubs throughout Semester 1. I will include a variety of
angles, subjects, and ensure include individual shots, small group shots, and a variety of
compositions.
Learning Skills/Work Habits Learning Goal: RESPONSIBILITY
I will demonstrate effective responsibility by being reliable to the team/club I am documenting. I
will attend scheduled home games, take a variety of photographs, and ensure I upload/edit/save
them the next day. I will be prepared to shoot by having the appropriate camera (Canon T5i with
telephoto lens, charged battery, 4GB SD card). I will return my loaned equipment to the
photography room/art department the next day.

Steps:
STEP 1) ACTION/CANDID PHOTOGRAPHY LESSON
o You will participate in a power point lesson that review tips, tricks, and examples
of proper action photography and candid photography
 Take notes on your handout
STEP 2) PRACTICE
 We will take practice shots during a gym class to review/critique/improve our angles
o You will work with your partner to collect a variety of shots
 Close-up face
 Body of athlete
 Small group of athletes
 Entire team
 One shot from each of the four sides (sidelines and end zones)
 In the lab, upload your images and Mrs. K will review/critique them with you, providing
you with helpful feedback
STEP 3) SCHEDULE/SIGN-UP
o Choose a minimum of two (2) occasions where you will act as photographer on
location  you are responsible for remembering your scheduled photo shoot!
 Set a reminder on your smart phone; write it in your planner/agenda
STEP 4) PHOTO SHOOT!
 Locate Bring proper equipment (Canon T5i, telephoto lens, full battery, SD card, camera
bag)
o Be ON TIME for the photo shoot. If a game/event starts at 3:00pm, be there 1015 minutes early to set up.

Connect with the coach(es)/staff supervisor so they know you are there and are
OK with you being around the team
 Ask Mrs. K to email a staff reminder the day prior*
STEP 5) EDIT & UPLOAD
 Return all equipment to Mrs. K
 Upload your photographs to your computer, use Photoshop to make some simple edits
(contrast, noise, highlight/shadow, hue/saturation, crop, etc. – no filters that distort or
abstract the photo)
o Save each image with the team/club and a describing name (EG.
Field_Hockey_goalie.jpg)
o Make a folder named after the team/club/event (EG. Field Hockey)
 Mrs. K will save your folder on to her USB
