Official 2011-12 award nomination form and instructions
Friend of Education – public official category
Friend of Education – private citizen category
To honor a state official or legislator who has made a
significant contribution to public education in Texas.
To honor a private citizen outside the field of education who
has made a significant contribution to public education in
Texas at the local or state level.
Prerequisites for the award
Must be a Texas elected or appointed official at the state level;
this includes state legislators and other statewide officials.
(Locally elected officials such as judges, county
commissioners, etc. may be eligible for the private citizen
category.)
Criteria for the award
This award may be bestowed upon an elected or appointed
official who, through leadership, actions and support at the
state level, has proven to be a true friend of education,
educators and students. The Legislation Committee will
consider the following in selecting the award winner: length of
time in appointed or elected office, history of specific
accomplishments benefiting public education, position of
leadership in state government, interaction with TCTA staff
and members, and other criteria as appropriate.
Nomination procedures




Nominations may be submitted by a local affiliate
president, or by a TCTA member-at-large in an area
where there is not a TCTA local affiliate.
Nominations may be submitted to TCTA headquarters
online at www.tcta.org OR via e-mail, mail, fax or hand
delivery using the contact information below. Submitted
materials will not be returned.
Nominations must be electronically stamped or
postmarked on or before Nov. 1, 2011.
Video/audio media (CDs, DVDs, PowerPoint
presentations, etc.) should be limited to no more than 15
minutes of total viewing time. Printed material in addition
to the nomination form should not exceed five pages.
Selection process
The TCTA Legislation Committee shall review each
nomination and select the winner.
Presentation of the award
The winner of TCTA’s Friend of Education award in the
public official category receives an engraved plaque and will
be honored during the TCTA Annual Convention in Houston
in February 2012. The winner will be invited to address the
TCTA Representative Assembly. Other awards will be
presented at a separate awards ceremony during Convention.

Cannot be employed in the field of education.
Cannot be a statewide elected or appointed official.

Committee will consider time and resources dedicated to
volunteering in public schools or otherwise benefiting public
education, teachers or students, and other criteria as
appropriate.

*Anyone employed in the field of education is not eligible for the Friend of Education award in the private citizen category.
