Entry Level - Forensic Laboratory Technician (DNA/Biology)

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, & Explosives Forensic Science Lab located
in Beltsville, MD just outside Washington DC. If you want to take your Forensic Science

Required Education
Candidate should have graduated from an accredited school in Forensic Sciences.
Additional degrees in the sciences is a plus but not mandatory. A masters or degree in
Forensic Science is preferred but not required.
Required Experience
Entry Level - Forensic Laboratory Technician (DNA/Biology)
An entry level Forensic Laboratory Technicians are responsible for laboratory-based
tasks, which include sampling, testing, measuring, recording and analyzing results in
biological, chemical, physical and life sciences. Provide all the required technical support
to enable the laboratory to function effectively whilst adhering to correct procedures and
health and safety guidelines. Carry out fundamental tests as part of a scientific team.
These tests assist in the advancement and development of modern medicine and science.
The work plays an important role in the foundation stages of research and development
(R&D) and in scientific analysis and investigation.
The main function of a scientific laboratory technician is to perform the specific scientific
procedures that allow scientists to perform the more complex analytical processes of the
laboratory.
Additional job duties required are:
a) Performs a variety of weekly and monthly quality control tasks for the forensic
biology discipline
b) Collects DNA samples from crime scene evidence
c) Assists in the maintenance and calibration of various DNA laboratory instruments
and equipment
d) Assists in conducting forensic biology research experiments
e) Assists in touch DNA/swabbing evidence
f) Performs DNA collection from guns/fire/explosives
g) Performs other general laboratory duties
Education/Experience: Must have at least a Associates Degree. Prior internship in the
DNA fields a plus. Experience in touch DNA preferred.
Candidates with a current TS or Secret clearance preferred but not required.
Condition of employment – Candidates MUST be able to pass a very detailed security
background.

Compensation:
Pay Rate hourly $23.48 depending on qualifications plus $4.02 an hour for health and
welfare.
