EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Chemistry, Forensic Science or
a related field in physical science with successful completion of a minimum of nine semester hours
(or equivalent) coursework in Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology, plus one year of
laboratory experience using recent technology including the use of a variety of microscopes is
required. A Master’s of Science degree in Biology, Chemistry, Forensic Science or related field of physical
science with college coursework or training in the subject areas of statistics and/or population genetics is
preferred and will substitute for the required one year of laboratory experience. College coursework
or training in the subject areas of statistics and/or population genetics is preferred. A minimum of one year
laboratory experience conducting DNA tests in a forensic DNA laboratory is also preferred. Experience with
evidence screening, DNA extraction, quantification, PCR amplification of STR fragments, and ABI 310
Genetic Analyzer and/or ABI 3100 Genetic Analyzer is preferred.
SKILLS: Knowledge of forensic DNA principles, laboratory techniques and technology is preferred, as well
as knowledge of the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Short Tandem Repeat (STR) analysis, and
capillary electrophoresis methods. Knowledge of biological evidence collection and preservation
techniques, rules of evidence, forensic serology, basic human anatomy and physiology, and basic
laboratory safety is also preferred. Computer literacy in the use of Microsoft Office applications (Word,
Excel, Access and Power Point) and familiarity with database applications such as: Justice Trax, LIMS
(Laboratory Information Management System) and CODIS (Combine DNA Index System) is preferred.
Membership in one or more professional forensic organizations and certification in a related area from the
American Board of Criminalistics (ABC) is also preferred. A valid driver’s license and the ability to
safely operate a motor vehicle are required.
JOB DESCRIPTION: Performs scientific examination and analysis of biological evidence collected in
connection with death and criminal investigations. Testing may also include: screening for the presence of
biological fluids using DNA analysis using Polymerase Chain Reaction/Short Tandem Restraints
(PCR/STR) based methods. Presents the findings in a technical report and verbally in a court of law
through expert witness testimony. Follows all established protocols and procedures and assigned other
tasks as deemed necessary by the Forensic Biology Director. In addition, works with laboratory

chemicals and various biological fluids with the possibility of being exposed to blood borne
pathogens. Essential physical requirements include: Lifting a minimum of 40lbs, sitting and
standing for long periods of time. Must successfully pass a test for color blindness. Must have a
manual dexterity to perform assigned laboratory tasks as determined by the Forensic Genetics
Laboratory Director. Will also provide a DNA sample which is maintained by the Forensic Genetic
Laboratory for quality assurance. Other established protocols and procedures may be assigned as
deemed necessary by the Forensic Biology Director.
