Rev. Kev’s Thoughts: “Wise and Otherwise”
The scenes from Joplin this week were not only heart breaking, but heart stopping. It is hard
to imagine the devastation that occurred there. I saw a picture of the Catholic Church down
in Joplin, before and after, the tornado. It reminded me of pictures from Hiroshima. Here is
part of a letter from Archbishop Carlson.
In an effort to aid the humanitarian efforts in Joplin, Missouri following Sunday night’s
devastating tornado, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of St. Louis is seeking to assist
donors by providing an efficient means by which donor support can reach those in need in
the timeliest fashion possible.
If you would like to aid this critical effort to support those affected by the tornado in Joplin,
please make your check payable to “Catholic Charities” (memo line: JOPLIN) and send to:
Catholic Charities
P.O. Box 952393
St. Louis MO 63195-2393
Donations can also be made online at www.ccstl.org.
Donations received by Catholic Charities of St. Louis will be distributed to those disaster
response agencies currently at work in Joplin attending to this crisis.
Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of St. Louis stands ready to accept all donations and
to distribute these funds where they are most needed. By donating through Catholic
Charities of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, donors will receive a timely acknowledgment of
their gift and the assurance that 100% of the money donated will be used to provide for
those unfortunate people most affected by this horrendous tragedy.
I ask for your prayerful support for those suffering the disastrous effects of this catastrophic
event. I urge you to assist them monetarily to the best of your ability through your donations
to Catholic Charities.
Most of all pray for those people.
Quick Inspiration: “Every moment and every event of every man's life on earth plants
something in his soul.” -Thomas Merton
Excerpts from Why Be Catholic by Richard Rohr and Joseph Martos
The monks and nuns typified those Christians who are willing to ask the ultimate gospel
questions and live the answers in total confidence. They were Christian radicals in the sense
that they went to the root of the gospel to find out what kind of life could grow from it. It
would not be unfair to call them the first Christian dropouts from society, for they dropped
out of mainstream Christianity to build community on an entirely different model from the
ones they saw in the world. Monasteries were essentially Christian communes where people
could practice radical discipleship in living the gospel. We sometimes forget that for about
the first five centuries of their existence they were composed almost entirely of laymen and
laywomen. In our own day the Trappist monks exemplify this early ideal of monasticism.
Most other orders in the Benedictine tradition live according to a more relaxed rule, but the
Trappist still follow theirs rather strictly, including the rule of silence. They insist that to
keep from getting caught up in the games that the world loves to play, one must live by very
different rules and apart from the world. This does not mean that the Trappists are unaware
of what is going on in the world, or that they are uninvolved in it. Thomas Merton was a
Trappist who influenced millions of people through his writings. Many of these were on
prayer and spirituality, but towards the end of his life he was well ahead of most Catholics in
his thinking on social justice. Ideas that he put fourth in the 1960’s about the arms race and
nuclear weapons were picked up by the American bishops 20 years later.

100 Simple Secrets of Great Relationships
#78 A Relationship is Built on a Foundation of Support If you believe your partner
supports you –supports who you are, supports what you are, support5s what you want, and
supports what you need – your relationship is built on solid ground. Any disagreement that
might arise is ultimately less important, and any difficulties your relationship might
encounter are conquerable, if you start from a position of mutual support. Give support and
demand support in your relationship, and everything else will be easier and better.
Researchers studying couples placed in stressful situations found that when both partners
felt support from the other, they actually experienced less discomfort, with supportive
couples showing 38% less effect of the stress on their blood pressure and heart rate.
