Drum for silence

Introduction
I was born in 1953,
grew up on a farm in
Värmland.
I have worked in
farming and in the forest,
in care and in schoool.
I moved to Jokkmokk in 1968
where I worked with mountain tourism.
This is where I built my studio.
I have been working with art
since I left school.
All my adult life
I have travelled
to different continents and
met different cultures.
I dream of
and plan new journeys.
Galleries
My pictures are based on motives from the virgin forest, the wetlands and the mountains of
Jokkmokk. I have worked with and experimented with different techniques, materials and
their combinations.
Prints
In print on paper
memories, experiences, longing.
Imagines from the Taiga
from the desert to a dream.
In my prints I see the trees, the birds and the rarely seen. What is hidden in the woods and the
drums. I portray the mountains of Jokkmokk and the desert of Botswana. The way the water
flows to humans and the air. The technique I use I learned in a collective of artists in
Botswana, artists from the San people, bushmen from the Kalaharidesert.
I cut into pieces of linoleum and print the pictures in a little press in my studio using different
colors. Every unique picture in the edition is an original.
Illustrations
The pencil dances

expressing
my impression
I make illustrations on commission and I also sell a CD with illustrations, to be used mostly as
clip art.
Paintings
The brush
leads my way.
Across the canvas
lies life in the North.
The inspiration to my paintings comes from the virgin forest of Jokkmokk, from the shapes
and colors of mushrooms, lichens, trees and animals. From the mysteries of the woods and the
songs of the drums.
To paint with oils has been the main theme through my artistry.
Instruments
I make my instruments from natural materials such as hides, wood, bone, seeds, and stones.
They are exiting and living materials offering surprises and they demand feeling, imagination
and ingenuity.
Rustlers
The cloven hooves of the reindeer
ring in the woods
ring over the mountain
dance around your ankle
in rythms from your depths
Cleaned and dried reindeer and moose hooves make fantastic instruments of rhythm.
I sow them onto barktanned reindeer hide to be tied around the wrists or ankles. Larger
hooves I fasten to a nice stick to be held in the hand.
Small bones from the feet of reindeer and moose I use the same way as hooves, they give a
somewhat more mellow sound.
Rattlers
Rattlers with stones
stones from the capercaillie
capercaillie who flew
flew over the woods
airstones, flystones…
The rattlers are made from raw reindeer hide, formed and filled with different kinds of seeds
or stones from the muscle stomach of the capercaillie, stones that have flown across wetlands
and woods. The handles come from my own surroundings and the different decorations come
while the rattlers are being made.
I also make rattlers on commission, according to your wishes, thoughts and my interpretation.
The rattlers are used as musical instruments, as meditation helpers and as something to see,
feel and imagine from…
Drums
Drum for silence
for freedom and love
drum for you and me.
Drum!
The frame drums that I make are round, oval or egg shaped, up to 50 cm in diameter. The
frames are glued in several layers, pine, birch or fir, using clamps to press the wood together
until the glue is dry after 24 hours. The drum hide is raw without hair. The hide is tightened
using strings made of raw reindeer hide. It can be painted. As protection while travelling I
make lined bags. The drum may be decorated with feathers, bones, glass beads and /or other
objects of meaning.
When ordering a drum we discuss wishes and inner pictures, animals and nature that is close
to you and the drum in making. When I later make the drum all the pieces usually fall into
place, colors, shapes and the sound of the drum.
Crafts
To enhance our beauty. To give a unique gift to a good friend. To feel, smell and give the eye
enjoyment with crafts close to nature. We have done so during our long stay on earth and will
continue to do so.
Glass beads, lampwork
Life in a bead
a bead of glass.
With reindeer hide
from mountain and woods
around your neck
to adorn.
I want to describe the light over the wet lands, the glitter of the creek and the air in a spring
mountain birch.
Thanks to a happy and much longed for meeting a few years ago, I now make glass beads in a
corner of my studio. With the help of a small gas flame I melt glass from different colored
glass bars and form the glass into beads. I combine the beads with tanned reindeer hide of
which I make strings, decorating them with details of silver thread, bone and horn beads. I
also use feathers from wood and mountain birds in my design.
I can make the beads and jewelry for your wedding or ball gown, to your festivity or everyday
wear. With the help of your ideas and pieces of the intended cloth I design a unique piece of
jewelry for you.
Hair adornment
A delicate bone
a bone from the forest of the moose
holds your long hair
adorning curls
with glittering beads
The ornament is made from moose bone, tanned reindeer hide and glass beads.
Hide pouches
In a pouch of
reindeer and fish
you carry
your secrets
I sow the pouches by hand using bark tanned reindeer hide, urine tanned fish skin and
decorate the pouches with my handmade beads.
Courses
Drum building course
A drum building course, planned with the participants.
Example:
Day 1
Every participant receives their frame and a reindeer hide.
I provide tools, paints and sandpaper for the making of the drum.
We cut the reindeer hides, soak them overnight together with strips of hide for the strings.
Day 2
We sand and paint the frames of the drums and let them dry.
We make the raw hide strings.
Rattlers can be made from the leftover pieces, they are cut and soaked.
Day 3.
We sow the tunnels on the hides and tighten them onto the frames.
The drums are hung to dry.
The rattlers are sown, shaped and hung to dry.
Day 4
The drums are tried and tested.
Drum sticks and decorations are made.
Rattlers are tried and decorated.
