CORNEAL DEPARTMENT AND EYE CLINIC

Director: Prof. Panajotis Ekonomides

We would like to inform you that for the best activity of the corneal department and especially the Eye-Bank and Transplantation surgery, as well as the corneal outpatients’ department it is necessary to have as soon as possible the instruments and tools bellow.

CORNEAL DEPARTMENT AND EYE-BANK

1.

Donor’s and recipient’s endothelioscopes (they are two different machines). The cost is 45.000 € plus tax.

2.

One set surgical tools for keratoplasty. The cost is 5.000 € plus tax.

3.

One Corneal pachometry . The cost is 7.000 € plus tax.

4.

Refractometer – Keratometer - Wavefront Analyser – Topography (It is one machine). This costs 35.000 € plus tax.

All these instruments and tools are necessary for the eye-bank working and for the corneal transplantation.

The last years we had in the eye-bank, an endothelioscope which was the former director’s.

The Hellenic Eye-Bank is a non profiteering laboratory which belongs to the AHEPA

Hospital and to the Hygiene and Provision Ministry and it is inspected by the National

Hygiene System and particularly from the National Organization for Transplantations

(EOM/NOT).

The aim of this laboratory is the vision restoration and confection of patients with problems from the cornea and anterior segment of the eye. This aim is achieved, with collection, control, preservation and sending eye tissues appropriate for transplantation and research, mostly in Thessaloniki transplantation centers and in any other similar units in all around Greece.

In 1986 the Eye-Bank was organized according to the International prescriptions. Our

Clinic was immediately organized with the help of specialist cooperators who were trained abroad, most of them in Swedish Eye-Bank, in receipt, elaboration and preservation of corneal grafts.

The Eye-Bank cooperators demonstrate an important work in research and scientific area, as well as research projects, publications, papers, Video & Posters in Hellenic and International congresses.

The result of the rapid grafting increase in our country was due to the Eye-Bank cooperators’ activity with other cooperator conveyors. It is characteristic that since in

1983 the number of transplantations has not been more than 3 to 5 per year, but the last 25 years the Eye-Bank has collected, controlled and preserved more than 1250 corneal grafts.

The Hellenic Eye-Bank operates in AHEPA Hospital places. In 1992 the Hygiene and

Provision Ministry published in the Government Newspaper the constitution and function of the Hellenic Eye-Bank. Today we are in the renewal approach of the Eye-

Bank and Transplantation Center of the AHEPA A’ University Eye Clinic.

I would like to point out that during the last months we have an important increase of eye donors which is the result of the sensibility and attempt of the AHEPA Hospital manager Mr. George Vergoulas, and of the Northern Greece Transplantations

Coordinator and vice President of the EOM/NOT Mr. Dimitrios Gakis to inform people.

We would like also to inform you that recently in the A’ University Eye Clinic of the

AHEPA Hospital we have applied two new techniques of grafting, the lameral keratoplasty and the endothelial transplantation. In this way we have the possibility to perform two transplantations with one graft. It is right that these procedures are believed to be as “the revolution in corneal surgery”.

I would like also remind you that the AHEPA Hospital is the unique Transplantation

Center which works exclusively with Greek grafts. Since last September, in about 50 transplantations only 2 grafts were from abroad.

For the Eye-Bank license renewal it is necessary and immediate the supply of two endotheliascopes one for the donor’s graft control and one for the recipient’s eye endothelial test which cost about 45.000 €.
