Urology One week surgery rotation
This subspecialty surgery rotation aims to provide a general understanding of urology to
medical students. The learning objectives will focus on topics potentially important to all
physicians. Students with a particular interest in Urology are encouraged to seek a more
comprehensive Urology elective experience. During this rotation students will be
required to attend morning ward rounds with the resident and take one night of call.
Attendance at Academic Rounds on Wednesday mornings is required. Opportunities for
ambulatory care and operating room exposure are available.
Rotation details
Students will meet with the senior resident at the beginning of the rotation and introduce
themselves to the coordinator.
The student will perform rounds with the residents on service at 7:00 am and at the end of
the day on ward GH3 at the Health Sciences Centre and 7ASouth at St. Boniface
Hospital.
The student will attend academic half day rounds on Wednesday mornings in Room
AD113, Multi-purpose Building, Health Sciences Centre.
The students will be assigned to clinic attendance, the procedure area or operating room
on a particular day but will be exposed to all three during the week.
The student will take call from home one week night under the supervision of the resident
staff during the rotation.
Learning objectives
At the end of the rotation the student should:
1. Be able to perform a focused urologic history and physical examination.
2. Be familiar with the investigation of:
Hematuria
Renal colic
Lower urinary tract symptoms secondary to bladder outlet obstruction
Incontinence
Urinary tract infection
3. Have inserted a urethral catheter
4. Gain confidence with performance of the genital and digital rectal examination
5. Be able to identify significant abnormalities on imaging with abdominal x-ray (KUB),
CT scan and MRI
6. Know the appropriate (and inappropriate) use of the serum PSA test
