ATTENTION PARENTS:
The 4R Challenge:
The final results are in for the DUSD elementary school recycling contest – the 4R Challenge. Year end results
were based on a combination of total year-end diversion rate, increase in trash diverted from the landfill from
the start of the program (Oct. 10) to the end of year (April 27), and extra points for various other programs
that each school participated in relating to waste diversion. Overall, the six elementary schools combined
increased diversion by almost 13% for the year – that’s outstanding! All the schools made a positive and
sustained effort towards full food scrap composting and the results show how well the program worked.
(Diversion consists of materials that were diverted from the landfill through composting and recycling
programs as a percent of the total of trash, recycling, and compostables collected; i.e., if the total waste
generation is 100 lbs., and recycling and composting equal 25 lbs. each, then the diversion rate is 50%.)
Year End Results:
1st Place – Dougherty Elementary
2nd Place – Murray Elementary
3rd Place – Fredericksen Elementary

Rosa Ornelas (Fredericksen Elementary’s custodian) is being recognized individually. Ms. Orneles singlehandedly set up a full-food scrap composting program in late January and it’s working great! Way to go FRED!
Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week:
Thank you to all of our students and parents for making this such a wonderful
week for all. We truly do feel appreciated!
Lost & Found:
We have 130 clothing items in the lost and found. The lost and found is located in the multipurpose room. We need
your help in getting lost items to their homes. Please stop by this week to see if any of the items are from your home.
Remember… Unclaimed items will be donated to Goodwill on the last day of school.
HAVE A GREAT WEEK!
