T32 Predoctoral Clinical Research Training Program
CALL FOR APPLICATIONS/NOMINATIONS OF MEDICAL STUDENTS
We are pleased to announce a call for scholars for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) sponsored
Clinical and Translational Science Center (CTSC) multidisciplinary clinical/translational research
training program entitled the Predoctoral Clinical Research Training Program (PCRTP).
The UC Davis PCRTP is part of a fully integrated approach by the UC Davis CTSC to advance
education and training in early identification, recruitment, and training of a cadre of multidisciplinary,
clinical and translational investigators working to improve human health. The overall goal of this
program is to provide the most junior trainees (medical students and basic science pre-doctoral
students) with the skills required to develop a career in multidisciplinary clinical and translational
research relevant to human health.
To achieve this goal we will address the following specific objectives:
1. Recruit and select highly qualified applicants who will develop a career in multidisciplinary clinical
and translational research.
2. Provide trainees very early in their careers with the didactic instruction, participation in
multidisciplinary "team research," and mentored research experience needed to undertake
innovative clinical research.
3. Increase motivation for selection into health-relevant multidisciplinary clinical and translational
research careers among the participating students.
In line with the focus of the NIH on translational research to bridge the gap between basic science and
improved human health, scholars will develop skill sets to lead and participate effectively in
team/translational science. The UC DAVIS PCRTP training will strongly advantage scholars in
preparing for successful careers in academia.
The UC Davis NIH PCR Training Program, directed by Lars Berglund, Associate Dean for Clinical and
Translational Research in the School of Medicine, will accept up to four UC Davis PCR
medical-student scholars for the 2007-2008 calendar year. Faculty may nominate a student, or a
student may apply directly to the program.
A stipend in the amount of $22,376 and tuition will be covered for one calendar year.
For full consideration, the application deadline is Tuesday, May 1, 2007.
Applications must be submitted to Ms. Glynis Butler-Stone at the Clinical and Translational Science
Center (CTSC), 2921 Stockton Boulevard, Suite 1400, Sacramento, CA 95817.
A “Letter of Intent” for application to the program is due by April 1, 2007 (A letter by the
applicant or department Chair indicating the name of the applicant and the mentor that will
indicate the applicant’s intention to submit an application by the May 1st deadline.)
Eligibility Criteria:
1.
Strong academic credentials and good communication skills.
2.
Strong interest in translational biomedical research.
3.
Student is able to commit one calendar year, full-time, to the PCRTP.
4.
Additional review criteria: Diversity of scholars’ background, interests, career aspirations in
translational research.

All students applying for the UC DAVIS PCR Training Program will be evaluated by the CTSC Education
Committee. Personal interviews may be necessary before final selections are made. Awards will be
announced in May.
If you have any questions regarding the application process, please contact Glynis Butler-Stone at
