DRIS Best Practice report 09-2011

Dear Board,

---(A) About motivations---

I have some regular suggestion on how increase motivations for members to share their information with DRIS and Best Practice information system

My suggestion is to use the expected members' interest to participation on behalf of euroCRIS and maybe on paid basis, at least:

- in projects funded by EC where euroCRIS is a partner;

- in providing expertize for organizations like Russian Academy of Sciences (I hope we will have in the future such request from

RAS nevertheless)

E.g. the Board can ask members to make their better professional representation at DRIS/Best Practice database to future selection of right candidates and etc.

---(B) DRIS design for www.eurocris.org

---

I will present updated DRIS specification and data model according

Anne, Keith, Ed, Brigitte and Danica comments and suggestions.

(which tables, entities, attributes should be used, together with their linkage)

But before I would like to put for discussion two topics:

Topic 1. It would be better if members could add and edit records/data for DRIS in decentralized online mode using some content management system

(CMS), including some version control, approvements for submissions, etc.

If I right remember information from Ed the current CMS at www.eurocris.org

is a simple one. And probably it is not good enough to be open for using by all members.

If it is correct, my suggestion is to use existed euroCRIS backoffice at SharePoint (eurocris.socionet.ru) as external CMS. We only have to create a harvesting tool to move data from the backoffice to DRIS database at www.eurocris.org

. The harvesting can be done by RSS.

So the questions are: a) will we use centralised or/and decetralised mode for adding/changing DRIS data ? b) if decentralised, will Ed install and maintain proper CMS at www.eurocris.org

, or it is better to use external CMS ?

Topic 2. It would be better do not include linkages' data into metadata of linked core objects like pers, orgunit and other. It means the linkages should have own IDs as normal information objects, and DRIS database should have separate table for them, and a tool to display DRIS records should also show all existed forward/backward linkages to them.

And I suggest to include linkage itself ID into CERIF link entities specification.

If we do this, it will be much easy to maintain semantic linkages created by members in decentralised mode.

---(C) Best Practice---

In Keith's message "euroCRIS BoardPreparation20110528.docx" there is a section:

Best Practice / DRIS

1. Collection of experiences refined to best practice (document in web) – business case for CRIS, requirements for CRIS, selecting a

CRIS, filling a CRIS, operating a CRIS, interconnecting a CRIS DRIS up on website (proforma for collection)

2. Example CRIS on website - e.g. start with project, add persons, then organisations, then publications etc

3. FAQs

4. Offer help with CRIS justification, CERIF-CRIS installation, problems when running, interfacing to other systems

5. Evaluation schemes – scientometrics – output / outcome / impact

I am working with this and it is not finished at the moment.
