Cinderella
 Once upon a time there was a man who married a woman with
two daughters. The man had a daughter of his own.
 Once he was married, he realised that his new wife was horrible!
And so were her daughters, who were also extremely ugly. (This
was largely because they were so mean.) They were all really
nasty to the man’s poor daughter.
 They made her do all the work, and at night she had to sleep in a
corner of the fireplace to keep warm. Because of this they called
her Cinders or Cinderella.
 One day an invitation arrived from the palace. It invited the three
daughters to a ball at the palace which the king and queen were
giving for their son the prince.
 The two ugly sisters decided that they were definitely not going
to let Cinderella go to the ball. So they did not tell her about the
invitation. Instead they went and bought ball gowns for
themselves.
 The night before the ball, poor Cinderella had to work
exceptionally hard to get the two sisters ready for the ball. She
had to iron and sew and wash and stitch.
 Eventually the two ugly sisters were all dolled up in their finery,
and they set out for the ball, leaving Cinderella sitting in the
corner of the fireplace.
 As Cinderella sat there she was suddenly startled by a swishing
swooshing sound. There in front of her stood a beautiful lady, all
dressed in sparkling clothes.

 “Who are you?” gasped Cinderella. “I am your Fairy Godmother!”
explained the lady. “I have come to make sure that you too can
go to the ball.”
 “But I can’t!” exclaimed Cinderella. I have no carriage, nor have I
anything to wear.” The lady smiled. “Don’t worry,” she laughed.
“All that can be arranged.”
 The Fairy Godmother asked Cinderella to fetch a pumpkin from
the garden. Then she asked her to get the mouse trap. In this
were four white mice. The Fairy Godmother waved her magic
wand, and lo! There stood not a pumpkin and four white mice,
but a beautiful golden carriage and four white horses to pull it.
 Then the Fairy Godmother asked Cinderella to collect three
lizards and a rat from the garden. She waved her wand again,
and lo! The three lizards became three footmen, all smartly
dressed in green. And the rat became a lovely fat coachman,
dressed in black velvet.
 Finally, the Fairy Godmother looked at Cinderella and waved her
wand again. Cinderella could not believe her eyes. There she
was, all dressed in silk and satin. Her dress was magnificent, and
she was wearing the prettiest pair of twinkling glass slippers that
you ever saw!
 Now Cinderella could go to the ball. “But wait!” her Fairy
Godmother cried. “One word of warning. On the stroke of
midnight, all the magic will cease, and all these things will turn
back into their original forms. You must be sure to leave the ball
before midnight!”
 Cinderella promised that she would not forget. She got into her
carriage and rode off to the ball, pulled by the lovely white
horses, and driven by the rat-coachman.

 When she arrived at the ball, all the heads turned to look at this
beautiful girl in her wonderful dress. But nobody knew who she
was!
 The prince came straight over and asked her to dance. After that
they spent all evening dancing and talking, and Cinderella had
such a lovely time, she quite forgot to watch the clock.
 Suddenly she heard the clock winding up to strike midnight.
Horrified she started to run, and without a word to the prince, she
ran straight out of the palace. Her carriage was gone and in its
place was a pumpkin and four white mice!
 Cinderella ran all the way home without stopping. Finally she
reached her house and she tore inside and just fell into her
corner of the fireplace. At that moment she realised that she had
only one glass slipper on!
 The prince came out of the palace. He could see nothing except
a rat and three lizards scurrying into the side of the lane. His
beautiful companion of the evening was gone! As he turned
sadly to go back in to the palace, he saw, there on the steps, a
small twinkling glass slipper.
 The next day, the prince sent round a footman with the twinkling
glass slipper on a cushion. The footman had orders that every
young lady in the kingdom had to try on the slipper. The prince
promised to marry the girl that whose foot fitted the slipper.
 When the footman arrived at the house of the Ugly Sisters, they
fought and squabbled over who was to try it on first. “I am sure it
will fit me!” said the eldest sister. “No! It is definitely my size!”
said the younger.
 The two sisters squeezed and pushed but neither of them could
get her foot into the slipper.

 “May I try it on?” said Cinderella, shyly coming forward.
“Certainly not!” cried the two Ugly Sisters together. But the
footman insisted and lo! The slipper fitted Cinderella perfectly.
 Cinderella went to the corner of the fireplace and brought out the
other slipper. The prince was overjoyed to have found her again,
and they were married at once, and lived happily ever after.
