WILL OF ELIZABETH HITCHCOCK OF HAFFIELD, LEDBURY,
WIDOW, 1644

In the name of God Amen. I Elizabeth Hitchcock of Haffield in the parish of Ledbury in the county
of Hereford, widow, being sick in body but of good and perfect memory, thanks be unto Almighty
God for it, do here make and ordain my last will and testament in manner and form following. First I
give and bequeath my soul to Almighty God, hoping by the merits of my saviour Jesus Christ hereafter
to enjoy eternal salvation; and my body, when I shall depart this transitory life, to Christian burial, to
be buried at the will of my executor. Item I give and bequeath unto my son William Hitchcock one
desk which was his father’s, and 20s. to buy him a ring. Item I give and bequeath unto my son Miles
Hitchcock 40s. to buy him a ring. Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sara Lockwood £10, to
be paid within 2 years after my decease. Item I give and bequeath to my cousin Anne Beddle 40s.
Item I give and bequeath to my daughter Eleanor Beale £50. Item I give and bequeath to my daughter
Anne Beale £50. Item I give and bequeath to my cousin Mary Hitchcock 20s. to buy her a ring. Item I
give and bequeath to my cousin Anne White £5. Item I give and bequeath to my cousin Elizabeth
King £5; to Nathaniel King her husband 40s,. and to Richard King her son £5. Item I give and
bequeath to my cousin Sara Beale £5. Item I give and bequeath to my cousin Eleanor Beale £10. Item
I give and bequeath to my cousin Joan Beale £10. Item I give and bequeath to John Beale and Miles
Beale 10s. to each of them. Item I give and bequeath to my neighbour Eleanor White, widow, 5s. to
buy her gloves. Item I give and bequeath to Roger Hill of the Hilltop in Oxenhall 2s. 6d. Item I give
and bequeath to Anne Parry, wife of Thomas Parry 2s. 6d. Item I give and bequeath to the poor in or
near Haffield 10s. to be distributed at the will of my executor. Item I give and bequeath to the poor
that shall come to my burial 40s. to be distributed likewise at the discretion of my executor. Item I
give and bequeath to every servant in the house where I die 12d. Item I give and bequeath to four
[men] that shall carry me to church 10s. Item I give and bequeath to the ringers 5s. Item I give and
bequeath to Christopher Stocke, rector of the parish of Bromsberrow 10s. to preach my funeral
sermon. All the rest of my goods, cattle and chattels unbequeathed I give and bequeath to John Beale
my son-in-law, whom I make whole executor of this my last will and testament. And I request
Christopher Stocke aforesaid, clerk, and Gilbert Beale to be overseers of this my last will and
testament, to whom I give 12d. apiece; and do hereby revoke all other and former wills and testaments
whatsoever. In witness whereof I have hereunto put my hand and seal the 4th day of August in the
year of our Lord God 1644. Elizabeth Hitchcock her mark.
