Studios
This summer’s art menu explores different subject
matter to suit every artist, it’s the perfect option
for the person who just fancies kicking back and
enjoying what’s on their doorstop.
Opt for Painting Clinics to finish off those works in
progress, Workshop & Demonstration days in the
studio or make a day of it with an Art Trip, pack a
bag and explore the joy of working in new local locations. Phone or text

Studio Workshops, Demonstrations & Themed Art Days
coming up this Summer.
Painting Clinic - resolve those half finished, unfinished and problematic
paintings.
The Painting Clinic is a two hour session where each artist will receive assistance and
encouragement to make decisions on the fate of each painting. Guidance and tips
will be given individually to complete unfinished work. Those paintings on board and
canvas that don’t make the grade can be recycled with a fresh coat of gesso primer
to be used again for future paintings – a great money saving solution! This session is
suitable for Oil and Acrylic (note that all oil paintings need to be dry before priming)
Painting Clinics will be in operation on the days and times listed below. The cost per
session is €25.00 and will include gesso primer. A tea break will be included in this cost.

Drawing, how to see & draw the shape of things 11am - 2pm
Drawing is the art of representing objects or forms on a
surface principally by means of lines and it is the backbone
of all art forms. Expand your ability to record and analyse
subject matter and objects. Understand the purpose of
line, tone, composition & proportion. Using a
demonstration format, watch how various drawings are
done, then practise & learn, supported through individual
tuition. This class is invaluable for all painters and is suitable
for absolute beginners and pro-amateurs. Suitable for
Teenagers & Adults. Please bring 1 object of your choice to
draw too. All drawing materials & refreshments included.

Watercolour, Modern Techniques & Textures 11am – 2pm

Learning to understand the capabilities of a medium
has a wonderfully liberating effect. It enables you to
‘find your own voice’ and express your ideas with
confidence and vigour. Learn new tips and
techniques for watercolour and embrace your fun
side, the liberation of colour and texture! Using a
demonstration format, watch how various techniques
are done, then practise & learn supported through
individual tuition. Expand your knowledge of water
based media. This class is suitable for acrylics,
watercolours and gouache. This class is suitable for
both teenagers & adults, from absolute beginners and
pro-amateurs. Cost €35 refreshments included.
Underpainting & Glazing - Building Tone 11am-2pm 7th July
Applying a colour ground, underpainting in one colour and
layering glazes in oils adds tone and depth to a painting. Using
a demonstration format, watch how various techniques are
done, then practise & learn, supported through individual
tuition. Expand your knowledge of water based media. This
class uses a combination of acrylics and oils and is suitable for
both teenagers & adults, from absolute beginners and proamateurs. Cost €35 refreshments included.

Art Day Trips
Dun a Rí Forest Park Sketching Trip 11th July
Inspired by the wonderful collections of trees
at Dun a Rí forest park we are heading out of
the studio to sketch! Pack yourself a picnic,
drawing materials and a sketchpad. Feel
free to bring paints if you want. This is a
family friendly event and open to children
accompanied by a guardian. The day will
begin with a quick drawing demonstration
and tips for drawing trees, then you are free to explore the forest park
and choose your subject matter. Each participant will receive
individual tuition. This trip is designed to gather subject matter as
opposed to creating finished pieces (which is better suited to studio
work) so bring along a camera. Meeting at 11am in the car park,
tutoring till 2pm, please bring your own picnic as we will have a 30 min
break. Cost €15, Family €20 inc. Adult. An entrance fee is payable in

Blackrock Sketching Trip 18th July
With mountain views, the beach and street
scenes to choose from we will be spoilt for
choices to sketch in Blackrock! Pack yourself
drawing materials and a sketchpad. Feel
free to bring paints, stool and a portable
easel if you want. This is a family friendly
event and open to children accompanied
by a guardian. The day will begin with a
quick drawing demonstration and tips for
composing your view, then you are free to explore the village and
choose your subject matter. Each participant will receive individual
tuition. This trip is designed to gather subject matter as opposed to
creating finished pieces (which is better suited to studio work) so bring
along a camera. Meeting at 12.30am upstairs in The Clermont Arms,
tutoring till 3.30pm, 2 course lunch is included in the price. Cost €30 pp.

These trips are planned for Mondays, if you are interested in
signing up for a Saturday trip please advise as it will be
dependant on numbers.

Carlingford Sketching Trip 25th July
With mountain views, a picturesque village &
historical buildings to choose from we will be
inspired from every angle to sketch in
Carlingford! Pack yourself drawing materials
and a sketchpad. Feel free to bring paints,
stool and a portable easel if you want. This is
a family friendly event and open to children,
accompanied by a guardian. The day will
begin with a quick drawing demonstration
and tips for composing your view, then you are free to explore the
village and choose your subject matter. Each participant will receive
individual tuition. This trip is designed to gather subject matter as
opposed to creating finished pieces (which is better suited to studio
work) so bring along a camera. Meeting at 12md at the car park
beside the information centre, tutoring till 3 pm. This includes a 30 min
break so bring a picnic or choose from a number of local restaurants

Also coming up in August - Small Works Gallery at the Studio
Every studio/group of artists should have the benefit of having a permanent
exhibition space so that local people can view the work of local artists
available for sale. This studio wishes to be a platform for high quality, local
and unique artworks at affordable prices. I hope to have this permanent
collection available to view on the website www.abbeyartstudios.com and
hung on view in the studio (space permitting). If you are interested in
submitting a framed painting please contact Susan before the 1st August 2010
for more details.
August 28th & 29th Ardee Turfman Festival
Inspired by the theme of the Ardee festival, Abbey Art Studios presents “The
Turfmen are Coming!!” It will be created using a large number of figures
made of clay. Everyone is welcome to come along and create a clay figure
to be included in this interactive community sculpture. We will be located in
the old McCabes Garage premises on the Main Street in Ardee. It is suitable
for all ages; no previous art experience needed, just come along and get
involved in this unique family friendly event. When the exhibit is over you may
return to collect and keep your sculpture.
The autumn programme will start at the end of September.
