The responsibility of Science &
Technology in this high profile company
ranges from identifying leading edge
scientific concepts, through to
consumer driven product development.
If you're studying for a chemistry,
science, food/nutrition, or chemical
engineering degree, we'll give you
valuable exposure and experience in
our science placements to help you
progress. You'll receive regular 1-2-1
coaching with your manager and
reviews of your performance and
development. You'll also be

Research*
The Cadbury Research teams undertake projects as determined by the senior leadership team, at the
Global Science Centre in Reading, in response to company needs. You will be required to work within one
or more of the teams and to actively participate in the day to day management of all aspects of the team’s
work. The research projects cover a wide range of activities from the development of recipes to analytical
techniques but always focus on the underlying science behind the work to provide a fundamental
understanding of the reactions which take place in the particularly food system, Essentially we provide
the Cadbury business with novel solutions to market requirements.
Product Ingredient and Innovation*
Our creative, knowledgeable and adaptable team of development technologists and scientist have the
skills, passion, experience and insight to help customers to formulate, develop or improve food products
to meet new product development briefs. We bring solutions from a wide range of product sectors to help
solve client technical and developmental issues and challenges. You will contribute to this by assisting in
carrying out specific projects in conjunction with a small project team to solve problems associated with
formulation of food products and ingredients.
*For the above positions if you have a successful year you'll be invited to participate in an
assessment centre, giving you the opportunity to apply for a position on our Science and
Technology Graduate Programme.

Consumer Science
The Consumer Science department works as a partner in Cadbury research projects to develop and
improve new and existing products. You will contribute to this by assisting the team running sensory
panel sessions; assisting the Category teams on key projects to deliver excellent sensory guidance to
research projects; managing an annual sensory screening programme for discrimination testing with
internal colleagues and assisting and participating in the development of new methodologies. There will
be the opportunity to use a range of sensory and consumer science methodologies and a chance to
develop product knowledge and understanding of the confectionery categories.
Analytical Laboratories
Speciality Analysis Division
The Speciality Analysis Division comprises three departments: Microscopy, DNA and Protein and
Investigative Analysis.
The teams provide a range of analytical services, investigative analysis and bespoke projects for
customers (including Cadbury) in the food, drink, consumer products, healthcare and pharmaceutical
sectors. The work is carried out to UKAS and GMP standards.
Industrial placement opportunities are available in Investigative Analysis and Microscopy where you will to
contribute by performing a range of analytical testing and investigative analysis (with supervision).
Training in analytical techniques and quality systems will be provided to help in this role.

Investigative Analysis
Investigative analysis work on fat and lipid chemistry, flavours, taints and chemical investigations
using techniques such as GC-MS, LC-MS, NMR and wet chemistry.

Microscopy
The Microscopy team investigate foreign body, material composition and structure using
characterisation techniques such as SEM, FT-IR, light microscopy and XRF.
Pharmaceutical Division
The Pharmaceutical Division comprises five departments: Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Functional
Ingredients, Metals, Physical Sciences and Clinical Sciences.
The teams provide a range of services including analytical and investigative analysis, bespoke projects and
clinical studies for customers (including Cadbury) in the pharmaceutical, healthcare, personal care,
consumer goods and food sectors. The work is carried out to GMP standards and UKAS (where required).
Industrial placement opportunities are available in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Functional Ingredients and
Clinical Sciences where you will to contribute by performing a range of analytical testing and investigative
analysis (with supervision). Training in analytical techniques and quality systems will be provided to help
in this role.

Pharmaceutical Chemistry
Pharmaceutical chemistry undertakes a wide range of contract testing to GMP. This includes both routine and investigative
analysis using techniques such as wet chemistry, UV-Vis, IR, dissolution testing and a number of chromatographic
techniques including GC, HPLC, TLC, LC-MS.

Functional Ingredients
This laboratory performs a wide range of analysis on a variety of different products. The team are trained in analytical
methods to detect, for example, vitamins, colours, sugars, sweeteners, preservatives, natural products etc. The department
is particularly focussed on chromatography techniques and the team routinely operate HPLC, GC, IC, LC-MS and UVvisible. Development and validation of analytical methods for both internal and external customers is an important part of
the work carried out.

Clinical Sciences
Clinical Sciences carried a variety of volunteer and patient based studies for consumer product and pharmaceutical
companies. Many of the studies are safety and efficacy assessments of cosmetics, personal care products, food and overthe-counter medications. All studies are performed to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and approved by an Independent
Ethics Committee.
