The State of UL’s Electronic Book Collections: February 25, 2008
BGSU subscribes to the following electronic book collections, either locally or via OhioLINK.
All titles in the listed collections *should* have entries in both the BGSU catalog
and the OhioLINK catalog soon after they are added to the collection. OhioLINK
typically buys vendor-supplied records, and they often need “clean up” before they can be
loaded.
I’ve indicated known delays and particular problems below.
E-brary (9,900+ books): University Libraries has purchased ebrary’s electronic books on
education and business, marketing, and economics. Each book is listed in the catalogs and the
ebrary reader must be downloaded to read the books.
Electronic Book Center (OhioLINK): The OhioLINK Electronic Book Center (EBC) offers
thousands of scholarly and reference e-books covering the humanities, sciences and social
sciences. The e-books were purchased from ABC-CLIO, Oxford University Press, and Springer,
and also include their following imprints: Apress, Birkhauser, Clarendon, Physica Verlag, &
Steinkopff. More information on the OhioLINK e-book Center is available at

ABC-CLIO (540+ books): A few dozen of ABC-CLIO reference titles are added at a
time, with about 100 titles scheduled for 2008. They are entered in the catalogs as
received, with typically a 2 to 3 week delay. Title lists are available at (Ostaff password

Oxford University Press “Scholarship” books: In total about 1425 titles in
biology, business, classics, linguistics, history, management, math, physics, psychology
economics/finance, philosophy, political science, and religion are in the pipeline to be
added to the EBC.

updated. Most of the dates on this page are currently incorrect (2/25/08).
As of 2/25/08
(1) The initial load of Oxford Scholarship titles are in the OhioLINK Catalog and the
BGSU catalog.
(2) Additional Oxford scholarship ebooks are on their way. Arrival data unknown.
(3) As new titles are added to the OL EBC, there will be a delay before the titles are
listed in the catalogs.
(4) Some additional Oxford titles (currently unavailable in EBC) are available at the
Oxford Scholarship Online website at http://www.oxfordscholarship.com/
Springer: These titles are NOT currently in the BGSU or OhioLINK catalogs.
OhioLINK is experiencing major problems obtaining Springer titles for the Electronic
Book Center. OL estimates they have only 6500 of the 11,000, and thus cannot load the
MARC record set, as this would load all 11,000 titles, including the approximately 4500
that are not yet in the EBC. Check here for title lists (Ostaff password needed for

Workaround: To access ALL 11,000 Springer titles, search the SpringerLINK
web site. Access SpringerLINK through the Research Databases page

 Gale Virtual Library: Selected titles, starting with 2007 imprints. (Does not
include Literary Criticism, UXL imprints, or any imprints that Gales does not

 Sage Reference: 19 reference titles, 2008 imprints. Contract is close to being
signed. Forthcoming titles: See appended list.
NetLibrary (14,800+ books): NetLibrary offers full text of scholarly, reference, and
professional books. DjVu® Browser Plug-in is required. To create a user account, BGSU
users must be on campus. After creating a personal user account, access from off campus is
available.
Oxford Reference Online (100+ books): Full text of over 100 dictionaries, general
reference, language reference, and subject reference works from Oxford University Press.
Search at publisher’s web site. This collection includes the Oxford Digital Reference Shelf titles.
Safari Tech Books Online (2,600+ books): Electronic books in computer science,
information technology, and related fields from O'Reilly and Associates and Pearson
Technology Associates.
Chadwyck-Healey Collections: Each collection (database) is cataloged in the OhioLINK &
BGSU catalogs, but all individual titles within the collections are not. Cataloging is in process for
individual sources, but seems to be moving at a slow pace. Last report: Completed a portion
of English Poetry; records for African-American Poetry, Eighteenth-Century Fiction, & American
Poetry have been in process, but are on hold while cataloging the Springer & Oxford ebooks.








