November 2004
Distinguished Alumnus
During his Homecoming Weekend visit,
Dr. John H. Flores, 2004 ISU
Distinguished Alumnus, urged students
in two Spanish 201 classes to further
their language studies and spoke fondly
of his days as a student in our
Department. A nationally recognized
school administrator, Superintendent of
Schools for the City of East Chicago,
and an ardent supporter of foreign
language education, Dr. Flores is
currently investigating scholarship
funding for East Chicago students to
attend ISU in Spanish and ESL/ENL
teaching.

Thanks to Profs. Betty Phillips & Leslie
Barratt and our intrepid Lab staffers for
setting up this event.
As everyone surely knows, ISU will
observe an Official Holiday from Wed.
Nov. 24-Fri. Nov. 26, inclusive. Time to
write those papers, make the exam-study
outlines, and try to have a little bite to
eat – on Thurs., perhaps? According to
various sources, Thanksgiving (Day) in
the US is our version of the “harvest
festivals” that are known all over the
world. After various tweaks over the
centuries, Pres. FDR set the day to the
current “fourth Thurs. in Nov.” in 1939.
Watch for further developments.
Meanwhile, everybody have a great
break. When we get back on Mon. the
29th, it will be week #15 of 16 (classes)!
