PROCEDURE FOR DEVELOPING AN
INTEGRATED CURRICULUM UNIT
1. Identify the grade.
2. Identify the topic/ theme.
3. Identify overall expectations from each guideline unit being used.
4. Design your culminating activity/ task.
5. Write a guiding question for the unit ( to focus the design of activities so that
they result in focused study that moves students closer to successful
completion of the culminating task).
6. Brainstorm activities.
7. Match brainstormed activities to the specific expectations from each
guideline unit you are using for this plan.
8. Add activities/ tasks where/if gaps exist. Ask yourself, “Is each expectation
taught thoroughly?”
9. Deconstruct each activity to identify embedded knowledge and skills.
10. Identify how you will assess and evaluate the products of each activity and of
the Culminating Task.
NOTE:
When you proceed to developing a “good” copy of this unit, you will need to
decide the order in which you will address each activity, and then the order in
which you will design individual lessons in order to ensure that every student
completes each activity successfully.
