CIVIL TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM AT HACC, SPRING 2015 CLASSES
Janka Ovcharovichova, Ph.D., P.E. – Civil Technology Program Coordinator
(717) 736-4208 j9ovchar@hacc.edu
All classes listed below are offered at HACC’s Midtown II location at the intersection of the North Third
Street and Reily Streets in Harrisburg.
Numerical Methods in Civil Engineering (CVTE 105).
Numerical and graphical methods are studied with strong emphasis on application in civil engineering. The
following areas will be covered: drawing graphs of two or more variables, log and semi log graphs, unit
conversions, linear interpolation methods, trigonometry formulas, roadway stationing, side slopes of the
ditches and swales, longitudinal and cross slopes, roadway gutter geometry and spreads, quantity and cost
estimates, contouring, work with engineering scale, weir flow, pipe flow, channel flow computations,
critical slope formulas, and variety of linear and exponential equations in drainage, highway and E&S
applications.
3-credit class, first 7.5-weeks of semester. Monday–Wednesday 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM, starting January 21,
2015, ending March 18, 2015.
Introduction to Highway, Drainage and E&S (CVTE 102).
The emphasis is on performing engineering computations, interpretation and application of the results. The
computations include the cross and longitudinal slopes, roadway stations, interior angles of the property
lines, and quantities according to PennDOT specifications. Developing the cross sections, profiles, drainage
areas, work with the soil maps, USGS maps and FEMA maps are also included. All assignments originate
from the projects from the industry.
3-credit class, second 7.5-weeks of semester. Monday–Wednesday 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM, starting March 23,
2014, ending May 4, 2015.
Selected Topics in Site Design (CVTE 209).
Emphasis is on the basics of site development design using software application. Students are introduced
to municipal zoning ordinances and all other design criteria set by the municipalities. Other topics are
Property Line, Right-of Way, and easements. Storm sewer, sanitary sewer, culvert design, storm water
management design, flow computation, drainage areas, time of concentration, TR-55 and PSUHM are also
covered.
3-credit class, late start, 12-weeks of semester. Tuesday-Thursday 5:30 PM to 8:20 PM, starting February
17, 2015, ending May 5, 2015.
Erosion & Sedimentation Control and Permits (CVTE 211).
The course earns 48 PDH hours which count toward the P.E. professional registration.
Emphasis is on E & S controls design as defined in the DEP Erosion and Sediment Pollution Control
Program Manual. Topics include soil study, contouring, common E&S BMP’s measures, sediment trap,
sediment basin and infiltration trench design. Other topics include ditch lining design, Rational Formula,
TR-55 formulas, construction sequencing and the introduction of common permits. All assignments

originate from the projects from the industry. The class contains field trips and guest speakers from the
DEP and Dauphin County Conservation District.
3-credit class, late start, 12-weeks of semester. Saturdays 8:30 to 2:00 PM, starting February 7, 2015,
ending May 2, 2015.
Microstation II (CAD 125).
Practical application of MicroStation for CAD operators. The focus is on work using plan views, cross
sections, typical sections, vertical and horizontal alignments and details. Dimensioning, stationing, angular
measurements, northing/easting values are taught. The class is strongly oriented toward PennDOT
application of the software.
1-credit class, first 7.5 weeks of semester. Tuesday–Thursday 5:30 PM to 7:40 PM, starting January 20,
2015, ending March 17, 2015.
Codes, Laws, Acts and Regulations (CVTE 120).
An overview of the codes, laws, acts, and regulations used most often in the civil engineering, surveying
and environmental fields, and architecture. The course introduces references and resources used in these
fields. The course also provides student with the basic terminology, and introduces the administrative part
of the permitting process and overview of the design requirements.
1-credit class, first 5 weeks of semester. Tuesdays 5:30 PM to 8:10 PM, starting January 20, 2015, ending
February 17, 2015.
Topographic Site Mapping (CVTE 111). In this course the student is working in AutoCAD and Civil 3D
environment to study the principles of the developing base topographic maps. Processing survey data,
creating survey drawings and compiling the CAD data for the conceptual design is also included. Drawings
will focus on all aspects of the site plan such as roads, contours, drainages, profiles, cuts and fills and
simple quantity computation.
2-credit class, last 7.5 weeks of semester. Tuesday -Thursday 5:30 PM to 9:25 PM, starting March 24,
2015, ending May 5, 2015.
Please see Hacc’s website for additional information. Individuals interested in taking any classes do not
have to be enrolled in the Civil Technology Program. If you need any additional information about the
classes please send e-mail to j9ovchar@hacc.edu or call (717) 736 - 4208.
Thank you for considering HACC for your continuing education.
