This project is funded by the U. S. Department of Education. One of its goals is to enhance the
knowledge and skills of teacher candidates for teaching mathematics and science to English Language
Learners (ELLs). The project is operated by UNT’s Bilingual/ESL Teacher Certification Office.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
1. Admission to Teacher Education to pursue certification in mathematics or science.
2. Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher at the time of signing this agreement form.
3. Mark option 1 or option 2

OPTION 1: PARTICIPATION IN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (LIMITED TO 20 PARTICIPANTS)
Attend two days of Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) Model and the English
Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) professional development for teaching mathematics and
science to English language learners (ELLs) at UNT on January 12th and January 13th 2016 from
8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., location Matthew’s Hall room 108. The project will provide a SIOP
handbook, the services of an educational consultant, a stipend of $100 per day (for a total of
$200), and a certificate of completion.
Provide a sample lesson plan on the last day of the workshops to the project coordinator that
includes SIOP features and strategies for teaching ELLS, daniel.baxter@unt.edu .
Access the Project NEXUS web portal with resources for teaching mathematics and science
education to ELL students at http://www.coe.unt.edu/project-nexus . You are encouraged to use
at least one resource in your courses.
Participate in external evaluation activities. This includes, pre and post surveys of workshops and
classroom observation using the SIOP Protocol Instrument during student teaching and lesson
plans.

OPTION 2: SCHOLARSHIP FOR COURSES RELATED TO TEACHING ELL STUDENTS (LIMITED TO
10 PARTICIPANTS)
Fill out a scholarship application for the project that will pay for two courses ($1,114 each):
- EDBE 4470 - Curriculum and Assessment for Bilingual and ESL
- EDBE 4490 - Teaching English as a Second Language EC-12: Instructional Strategies and
Resources.
Enrollment in the courses are expected in the fall 2015 for the spring or summer 2016. Successful
completion with a grade of A or B in the course(s) is required.
Provide a copy of your thematic unit that includes ELPS, SIOP features for teaching ELLS at the
end of the EDBE 4490 course to the project coordinator, daniel.baxter@unt.edu .

education to ELL students at http://www.coe.unt.edu/project-nexus. You are encouraged to use
at least one resource in your courses.
Participate in external evaluation activities. This includes classroom observation using the SIOP
Protocol Instrument during student teaching and submitting one lesson plan.
OTHER BENEFITS AVAILABLE
All Pre-service teachers are encouraged to:
1. Take and pass the ESL Supplemental exam to have ESL added to their initial certificate by TEA. The
project will reimburse the exam registration fee of $131.
2. Become a member and/or attend a conference of at least one of the professional organizations
below. The project will reimburse the cost of conference registration and travel for 5 students:
a. Texas Teachers of English for Speakers of Other Languages (www.TexTESOLV.org)
b. Teachers of English for Speakers of Other Languages (www.TESOL.org)
c. Texas Association for Bilingual Education (www.TABE.org)
d. National Association for Bilingual Education (www.NABE.org)

f. UTEACH (www.uteach.org)
