The Scottish Association for Marine Science UHI (SAMS) is seeking highly motivated candidates for
four new posts:

These posts have been created through the UHI MERIKA project:
‘MERIKA (Marine Energy Research Innovation and Knowledge Accelerator) is an ambitious initiative
by UHI (University of the Highlands and the Islands), located in Scotland and the UK’s outermost
region. The project revolves around the concept of turning the UHI Faculty of Science, Health and
Engineering into a reference research and innovation hub for all of Europe on the theme of marine
energy’
Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Marine Environmental and Ecological Economics
Salary £34,199 - £45,838
An opportunity to conduct influential research on the economics of marine spatial planning, the
development of marine renewable energy and to provide leadership to a growing team of social
scientists working in the marine and coastal environment. Scotland’s largest and longest established
independent marine institute and founding partner in the University of the Highlands and Islands is
seeking an experienced and productive economist to play a key role in building applied
interdisciplinary research.

Research Fellow in Marine Planning

An opportunity to join a rapidly-developing team of social and natural scientists and play a leading
role in researching marine spatial planning with a focus on the marine renewables industry. The
successful candidate will have a relevant postgraduate degree and at least 5 years’ experience in the
public or private sectors. SAMS is an independent and dynamic institution - the largest of its kind in
Scotland - developing quality research, teaching and commercial activities in superb modern
facilities. It is a founding partner of the University of the Highlands and Islands.

Postgraduate Research Associate in Ecology

Early career opportunity to be part of a team of social and natural scientists who will employ a wide
range of valuation techniques to help planners optimize the benefits of the marine renewables
industry without compromising ecosystem services and biodiversity. The successful candidate will be
able to demonstrate prior experience in data gathering and analysis for environmental economics as
well as excellent writing and interviewing skills. SAMS is an independent and dynamic institution the largest of its kind in Scotland - developing quality research, teaching and commercial activities in

Post Doctoral Research Associate: Acoustician in Ambient Underwater Sound
An opportunity to support influential research on acoustic impacts in the development of marine
renewable energy. Scotland’s largest and longest established independent marine institute and
founding partner in the University of the Highlands and Islands is seeking a self-motivated individual
with skills in quantitative studies along with experience in operating and carrying out passive
acoustics data collection, processing and presentation.
