SILICA AEROGEL INSULATION
FOR PIPING, VESSELS AND EQUIPMENT
1.0 GENERAL
1.1 SCOPE
1.1.1 This specification covers manufacturing, supply, testing of insulation of piping and
equipment operating between ambient temperature and 649OC for the purpose of
heat conservation, process stabilization, temperature maintenance, personnel
protection.
1.1.2 This specification is suitable for use in normal process plant atmospheres.
1.1.3 All the codes/standards mentioned in this specification shall be of latest issue.
2.0 TECHNICAL REQUIREMENT
2.1 INSULATION MATERIALS
2.1.1 Silica Aerogel
1) High temperature insulation blanket formed of silica aerogel and reinforced with a
non-woven, glass-fibre batting such as Pyrogel XT or equivalent.
Flexible Aerogel & its properties considered, qualification and requirements shall
confirm to ASTM C 1728, Type III Grade 1 Category A.
2) Silica aerogel blanket – Density - 176 Kg/m³ (minimum).
3) Min width of insulation roll shall be 1473 mm.
3.0 INSPECTION & TESTING
Scope of inspection shall be as called for in QA plan enclosed (MQP No:
SMQP/PI/082014). Inspection agency shall be BHEL / Lloyds / others as per enquiry
document.
5.0 PACKING
The blanket roll shall be packed in manufacturer standard containers suitable for
overseas transportation.
6.0 MARKING ON PACKING CASE
The following marking shall be done on each packing case minimum on two sides and
also at the top:
(a)Complete address of the consignee and destination as per BHEL Purchase Order.
(b) BHEL Purchase Order Number (c) BHEL standard Number (d) Number of pieces in
each packing case/container (e) Net Weight (f) Gross Weight (g) Packing case number
and total number of packings

7.0 GUARANTEE
Aerogel insulation vendor shall guarantee all Aerogel material against the defects due
to manufacturing effecting performance for a period of twenty four months from the
date of supply and shall repair /replace promptly, without cost, any part or parts of the
material that fails within said period. All the test certificates required as per this
document shall also be furnished along with the supply of materials.
8.0 DOCUMENTATION:
Bidder shall confirm in their bid for compliance in all respect for the submission of
documents along with no. of copies (indicated in brackets) to be submitted at various
stages to Purchaser as indicated below:

10.0 PRE QUALIFICATION CRITERIA (PQC)
10.1. Bidder to submit the Silica Aerogel Qualification Criteria detailed below:
10.1.1 The vendor shall be an established manufacturer of Silica Aerogel material having
adequate engineering, manufacturing & testing facilities.
10.1.2 The Aerogel offered shall be from the regular manufacturing range of the vendor
meeting quality requirements as per ASTM C 1728.
10.1.3 The vendor shall be in the field of Aerogel products for minimum of last 3 years.
