Chapter History
o The Beta Nu Epsilon Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society was founded in 2004
at East Los Angeles College located in Monterrey Park, California. Founding Chapter
Advisor, Professor Alison Davis, desired to promote the ideals of Phi Theta Kappa on
our campus while giving members access to all of the benefits available.
Since our founding, Beta Nu Epsilon chapter has continued to grow and develop its
members into leaders on and off of campus.
 National History
o Phi Theta Kappa was founded in 1918 by eight junior college presidents in Missouri,
intended to unite student members with a common purpose emphasizing scholarly
and leadership activities.
In 1929, The American Association of Junior Colleges (now known as the American
Association of Community Colleges or AACC) officially recognized Phi Theta Kappa
as the national honor society for junior colleges.
Today, Phi Theta Kappa is headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi and has more than
2 million members in more than 1,250 chapters, in each state of the United
States, U.S. Territories, British Virgin Islands, Marshall
Islands, Canada, Germany, Federated States of Micronesia, United Arab
Emirates, Republic of Palau, and Peru.
