Task Overview
2: Problem Solving-Students can solve a range of complex well-posed
problems in pure and applied mathematics, making productive use of
knowledge and problem solving strategies.
Constructed Response, Performance Task
G.6 Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area,
volume, and surface area of two-and three-dimensional objects
composed of quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes and rectangular prisms.
1, 3, 4, 6
Students will be asked to solve some constructed response questions
involving area of 2-dimensional figures in part one of the task. In part
two, students will solve for surface area and volume of 3-dimensional
figures. The performance task requires students to design a cereal box
that is the most cost efficient of the two they created given a specific
volume.
Yum Yum Cereal
Congratulations on being hired as the new design engineer for
Yum Yum Cereal Company. You are excited to use all of your expertise
to make your new boss proud.
Part 1
1) Find the area of the rectangles.

A=___________cm2
2) If the area of a rectangle is 24 cm2, list as many possible dimensions as you can.
Part 2
1. How many faces does the cube have? __________
2. What is the total surface area of the cube? Show your work.
5 cm

SA=___________cm2
3. Explain how you found the total surface area for the cube.
4. Find the total surface area of the rectangular prism. Show your work , step by step.

4 cm
SA=___________cm2
5. Find the volume of the rectangular prism above. Explain your steps.
V=___________cm3
6. If the volume of a rectangular prism is 240 cm3, what could be the dimensions? Draw
and label your diagram.
Part 3
Since you were just hired at Yum Yum Cereal Company, you get to design the next cereal
box. Yum Yum cereal just got a huge contract with Super Size Mart. The package for the
cereal must have a volume of 4000 cm3.
Your task will be to create a poster that will include the following:
1. Create 2 or more different packages that would hold a volume of 4000 cm3 of cereal.
Draw and label your diagrams and show all work to support your answer.
2. Find the surface area of each box you created. Show all your work.
3. If it costs $0.0002 per cm2 for the cardboard box, which box will be more cost efficient
to make? Show all work to support your answer and explain why.
4. Design your most cost efficient cereal box. Be sure to include the title of the cereal and
label the dimensions. It must be creative so YUM YUM customers will buy it.

Part 1
1. 64 cm2 (correct answer)
36 cm2 (correct answer)
2. Possible Solutions: 1 x 24, 2 x 12, 3 x 8, 4 x 6
Part 2
1. 6 (correct answer)
2. 150 cm2 (correct answer)
Work shown but may include correct process but incorrect
arithmetic.
3. Response should include some of these “look-for” phrases:
 I multiplied 5 x 5
 The area of each face is 25
 I multiplied 25 by 6
 I added 25, 6 times
4. 508 cm2 (correct answer)
Work shown, may include correct process but incorrect
arithmetic.
 Arithmetic error when multiplying the dimensions
 Arithmetic error when adding up the area of the faces
Work shown, may include incorrect process but correct
arithmetic.
 Added up only 3 of the 6 faces.
5. 616 cm3 (correct answer)
Response could include “I multiplied 4 x 11 x 14” or “I
multiplied L x W x H”.
6. Possible solutions could include the following:
(1x1x240, 1x2x120, 1x4x60, 1x10x24, 10x4x6, 4x12x5,
3x4x20, 2x3x40, 2x2x60)
